1.8 16 vavle misfire

Post by crad2 »

Any advice welcome please
1996 1.8l 16v has suddenly developed a hesitation / misfire mainly during acceleration most noticable around 2000 revs, cruises ok and idles ok.
Changed plugs as first step. But no luck.
Partner said it began when she put petrol in yesterday. Was wondering if it might have been some dodgy petrol. Have put more petrol in today and give it a good run but not improved it.
Bit puzzled now.
Thanks for any help.

Noticed its not doing it this morning from cold start. Began missing and hesitating as it got warmed up.
A friend who used to work at peugeot garage said coil packs on these didnt fail much at all. :?

If it's of any help many moons ago I had the exact same year/model/engine with the same intermittent missfire and it was the coil pack!

Coil packs on these fail all the time. They develop small cracks in the plastic and as moisture gets in you get exactly the fault you describe.

Here's how you fix it:

Take of your coil pack, and locate the cracks. Spray a liberal amount of crc/wd-40 in there. Use either an airgun or a can of compressed air to blow it clean. Repeat a couple times. Seal of the cracks with Tec 7 or something similar. Enjoy.

Also these cars are pretty forgiving when it comes to bad fuel. I accidentally had half a litre of water in my fuel (don't ask), and after about 10 minutes of start-stop and turning it came back to life and has ran as clockwork ever since. Didnt even change the fuel filter.

Good info there mate,

IMHO, you can repair them. but its best to replace them
I've used hareldite or a smear of Vaseline stops them a rkin out.

But the heat of the engine breaks them down again
Alright as a temp measure tho
