Re: RAC car insurance.
I was insured with the RAC on my previous car, a Peugeot 106.
February 2012, someone slid on snow and their back end came round, and smashed into me.
Managed to drive the car the 1 mile home. Phoned the number on the insurance certificate.
The number was a company of accident claims specialists/lawyers. They took the details, and were
really interested in whether I had whiplash, asked me to do various exercises.
I said I wasn't really interested in accident claims, just in a decent settlement form the other party's insurers.
Day and a bit later, Aviva, the 3rd party's insurer arranged to pick up my car, took it away, shortly afterwards
phoned to say they intended to declare it a write off, and said they would offer £400 settlement. I declined, and there then
ensued a stand-off.
Following morning a £400 cheque from Aviva arrived in the post. I posted it back to them by recorded delivery.
After a few days mulling things over, I decided to just go 'with the flow' of the current car insurance scenarios...
I spoke to the accident claims people again, and gave them the go-ahead to pursue Aviva for an accident claim settlement.
Within the hour they called me back to say that Aviva had agreed a figure of £800. Would this be agreeable to me.
It was.
NOTE: I was uninjured. This settlement was for me to waive any future claims arising out of this matter further down the way.
I then called the Aviva people who had dealt with the settlement offer on my car. I said that an agreement had been reached on injury claims.
And that the separate settlement figure of £400 for the car would now be acceptable to me.
The £400 cheque arrived within a few days. The £800 arrived about 6 weeks later, which I understand is normal.
Coincidence of coincidence..., the total of £1200 almost exactly matched what Aviva had originally said it would cost to repair the 106.
I got the 106 back, and disposed of it my leisure.
ALSO: The insurance underwriters for the RAC policies are the Co-oP, ie CIS (Cooperative Insurance Society).
So really the only RAC involvement in the whole thing is the RAC logo on the letterheadings and insurance certificate.
As you can see, I did most of the work myself on this.., as I was pretty sure if I had got the Co-Op even a tiny bit involved it
would have had an effect on my premium come renewal time, even though the 3rd party put his hand up for it all right away.
When I bought my 406 some months later, I insured with Swiftcover, mostly because they were a few quid cheaper. I do tend to
review insurers every year.

Re: RAC car insurance.
i have my 406 and my 106 insured with rac
i insured my 106 and their operator made a mistake and logged me with 8 yr ncb on the 106
(i had 8yr ncb for the 406 but 106 was a fresh start policy with 0 ncb)
so,5 days later i get a letter for evidence of my 8yr ncb for 106.
Rang them to tell them they were wrong,so the operator closed the policy saying yes you will get a refund of £153(5 days earlier i had gave them 157 pound)when you return the paperwork which was posted next day.
I then had to open/pay another policy,sum of £168 @ 0 ncb(£15 more for a starter insurance!)
2 weeks passed,no refund.
Rang them up,said they had not received my former certificate for the 106
at this point thought i was going to loose my refund.
operator emailed me which i had to reply to ,1 week later the money came through but i honestly thought i was gonna be screwed over by them.just found out yesterday the cash was returned.
I really had a bad feeling abut rac insurance, just hope i never have to claim through them, think it may be a night mare.
in reality, its hard to beat a local broker on the street,it may cost more but i think if you have to make a claim, the service will be much better than working with online firms
