Re: spot the difference?
That is a hell of a coincidence!

Re: spot the difference?
Years ago we had a white J-reg Vauxhall Astra, J45 PPJ (not a private plate).
Then about 6 months ago driving down the A24 in Dorking I saw another white Astra, reg was J46 PPJ.
Very weird coincidence!

Re: spot the difference?
Looked at this thread 3 times now.
What wrong with the reg? I had an S plate S81 and parents had an F plate F671? Or am I missing something!

Re: spot the difference?
I thought the point was the cars had very similar numberplates and are almost identical cars (but then I think dealers are issued runs of numbers, if they're selling one brand of cars then it's quite likely they'll get similar plates on similar cars especially if they're selling a batch for a fleet), apart from mileage and price.
Someone should buy both cars, they'd only need to MOT, tax and insure one...

Makes perfect sense to me. We've got several Mercs at our work that look identical & just have one different letter on the reg plate.steve_earwig wrote:I thought the point was the cars had very similar numberplates and are almost identical cars (but then I think dealers are issued runs of numbers, if they're selling one brand of cars then it's quite likely they'll get similar plates on similar cars especially if they're selling a batch for a fleet), apart from mileage and price.

But I do have a good one from a few years ago. When my Dad was the transport manager for a tyre wholesaler, the first brand new vehicle he bought was a Renault Master with the reg number H327COT, bought from the Southampton Renault dealer. About 200yds from our house was a guy with a gorgeous Astra GTE 16v with the reg number H723COT, bought from the Andover Vauxhall dealer. I know there was supposed to be some way of telling where cars originated from by the 3 letters on the plate (before the 51 plates came), but what are the odds of those 2 being so close?

Re: spot the difference?
My Focus came from a dealer in Barry called P.W.Miller.
There was a 'batch' of Focus Focus LX 1.6's at the time brand new up for £9995.
When I drive around barry I always see Focuses same spec with only 1 or 2 digits out.

Is there anyway of knowing where the cars were registered based on the old system as you've mentioned?
I've found this but this is more for the new system.

Can't find anything that tells you how to tell where they came from, but this backs it up:Sonia406 wrote:Is there anyway of knowing where the cars were registered based on the old system as you've mentioned?

It was a taxi driver that told me years ago.

Re: spot the difference?
I wish there was a site that said where it was registered for the letters to be in the reg.... Plenty of sites tell you about the new registrations but none for the old..........

Re: spot the difference?
The old plates used the last two letters,eg: if the letters were AWL the WL bit would be the bit you go by and this case it would be Oxfordshire,I have and old Observer book of cars somewhere dating back to the 50's and it has them all in there,i used to know quite a few off by heart but the the old grey matter isn't what it used to be,I know Oxfordshire is,BW,UD,WL,FC.
