Re: Xud9te/y 1.9td 1997 tuning help
HI Dan,
Not wanting to be negative but any particular reason for wanting to tune a 1.9td and not just getting a 110 or 136 hdi?
The 2.2 can be mapped up to 170/180 bhp with minimum effort and will probably give better fuel economy than a 1.9 with tweeked fuelling.
I'm on my second 1.9 and think they're great cars but the money and effort to make them as quick as the 110 just isn't worth it when I could have bought the 110 in the first place for similar money.
From 2001 onwards the 110 hdi is cheaper to tax, insure and run than the 1.9, the upside to the 1.9 is it will run on veg, it's a rock solid engine and a very simple engine to work on for my level of ability.

What?!
My 1.9 405 was last rolling roaded at 124.3bhp and 195ftlb. Since then it was re-tuned and upto approx 130bhp/220 ftlb. Last week i had my MOT had to de-tune. Then re-tuned and it feels roughly 140bhp and 230 ftlb ish.
Simple job to tune the 1.9's... fit an 11mm head to the pump from a transit fuel pump. Governor mods and LDA mods.
The OP may be on a bosch but there's various bosch's, some of which are preset and cannot be tuned. i'd be able to tell from a picture. I can also carry out any work you need, normal or tuning.

The screws are hidden under the protective shield for the imoboliser.
You will have to drill out the shearbolts to get at the fuel screw.
My 1.9TD was running 125bhp on the standard 9mm head! Had a decat and was tuned to 22psi. Loved that car in all fairness
That was 125bhp running veg oil too!
The inmtercoolers on them are huge as standard. Just a little thin!

First thing you need is a boost gauge, otherwise you are tuning blind. Intercooler is good as standard on the 406. Probably no need for an 11mm head unless you are going for over 180bhp. The main pain in the arse is that your pump will most likely be armoured so you can't get to the main fuel screw. Realistically you will need to remove the pump from the car to de-armour. However decent gains can be made without the main fuel screw. Wind the turbo waste gate in a turn or 2 to start. Rotate the LDA pin 120 degrees clockwise, this will set on boost fuelling to its most aggressive. You can also fiddle with LDA pre-load etc, lots of info on the net. To take this a step further, you can use a custom ground LDA pin with an even more aggressive profile. To get even more fuel in, you can adjust the throttle arm itself. Undo the nut that secures the throttle cable to the arm and move it all the way to the inner most point on its slot. This will give you more arm travel for the same amount of pedal travel (you will need to adjust the cable to take up any increased slack). The amount the arm can move is restricted by a screw, this can be wound out or even removed altogether to allow for maximum arm travel. I would also advise a de-cat if the cat is still present. If it's a poorly maintained engine it may well go bang very quickly.
