406 2.1 TD occasional starting problem

Post by finchyboy »

Hi guys my first post so thnks for letting me join. I have 2.1 td 406 that occasionally refuses to start in spite of recently being fully serviced and having the glow plugs replaced. I have been told it may have something to do with the fuel pump any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the nut house :D

When it fails to start, do you notice any difference in the noises it makes when you switch the ignition on prior to engaging the starter? Personally I haven't worked out what's what in the little symphony my 406 gives me before I start it (can you tell I'm in a good mood with mine today?), but apparently one of the whirrings is the fuel pump doing stuff which means a change in the sound (perhaps a particular whirring is missing?) could well indicate a problem with it.

Also, it's not your immobiliser kicking in is it?

I can't really hear the pump whiring either way if i'm honest. I do know what you mean it was quite loud on my previous SRI Turbo 406. The key not disabling the immobilser is posible i suppose but i'm sure i read somehing somewhere about fuel pump related probs with the 2.1 TD lump.
