Not even so much as an oil change?!
Nope. Topped oil occasionally only. Although I do admit it is high time I changed the filter!
A good testament to how hugely robust and hardy the 406s are. Not that I necessarily approve of the lack of care
There is actually a bit of history with this; Many years ago I was a shift leader, maintaining a naval radio transmitter station near Capetown. I was able to show the station chief that most of the transmitter faults occurred after scheduled maintenance. He allowed me to run a trial which proved a correlation between high failure rates on equipments that had "suffered" scheduled maintenance and a trouble free period of operation for those that didn't have the scheduled maintenance. Scheduled maintenance routines (which involved daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual etc inspections) were then dropped and the station became more reliable, with virtually zero unplanned down time.
At that time (mid 1970s), I had a colleague who had a Peugeot 404 (I think). He made it into a magazine story about his car when he passed 500,000 Kms.
Also, my first Peugeot was a 406 saloon, a company car. When the 1,000 mile service fell due, I was in Paris on business. When I returned home the leasing company refused to let me get the first service done as I had passed the 1,000 mile mark. So I thought "stuff it. it isn't mine anyway so why should I worry?".
A couple of years later, I bought it from the leasing company for £1,500 and it never had a service or a problem, other than a recall for a faulty microswitch in the transmission.
The bottom line is, as you say, "hugely robust and hardy". Talking with my son recently, I said that if I won the lottery, my next car would still be a Peugeot.
And then I look at my brother with his Audi and the phenomenal amounts he pays for maintenance and laugh my head off!
