Steering column rattle

I have the same sort of problem sounds like a whine or whrring noise when accelerating or revving and tensioner bounces up and down when idle, will be fitting new crankshaft pulley and tensioner friday if its not that can you get alternators repairs i.e. new pulleys and bearings

You can these alternator pulleys on eBay for about £30. I wouldn't want to try and get the pulley off myself so I'd take it to a garage to have it replaced.

I think you a special tool to change the pulley,not sure of the quality of the ebay £30 pulleys.Does the chap who you got the other bits through sell them as he seems to sell good quality stuff.

Looks like my clutch pulley is seized. I stuck a screwdriver in the vents and tried turning it using the fan bits but it wouldn't turn in either direction. Phoned this guy and asked him to test the pulley and he said it worked fine. So, picking it up tomorrow and fitting it Saturday.

Will keep you posted - and have your fingers crossed for me!

All i will say is check and double check the electrical connections on yours and the replacement as when i changed mine there were so many different types it made me head hurt,mine had a bolt on main feed and a plug for the other connection,even the plugs can differ,also the amperages differ as to the spec of the car,mine was a 150A which i suppose is for all the electrical bits an Exec has on them

Yeah, I've done some investigation on this and they all see to be 150A output. Let's hope all the connections are correct!

Got the alternator today - the clutch on it is good!

Wonder if I can "free up" the clutch on the old one?

New alternator with a non-seized pulley was the answer! If only I had checked that before but I didn't even know anything about alternator clutch pulleys Huge thanks to grasmere59 for pointing me in the right direction and everyone else for all the advice!

I don't know if this actually fixed the steering wheel rattle as I haven't driven it yet but will be going to see my parents later on so will check that out.

This fix would be worth adding to the Knowledge Base - just a shame you had to be the Guinea Pig

The steering wheel is still vibrating slightly but it doesn't rattle any more. This is more than likely due to the bottom mount fitted horizontally (in the direction of the arrow) rather than vertically. Still, I don't think I'll bother changing it as it's a huge hassle and the vibration is really not that bad.

When I replaced that lower mount for you I fitted the new one in the same position as the old one came out.

I marked the position of the old one, you may still be able to see the marks as I used a hacksaw blade to mark it with.

Yeah, so the garage who did the replacement must have put it in the wrong way. No big deal and it will last much longer
