Ignition barrel

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Ignition barrel

Post by stuartkeith »

Hi peeps. Today my key jammed in the ignition, we were unable to turn the car off and had to stall it to cut the car.

The key then snapped out of the fob trying to get it out. I managed to remove the key by raising and lowering the steering column a few times.

I'm using the spare key now, but my heater is now not working, and the lock is very stiff.

Looks as if need a new barrel, but wats involved? I've seen auctions with it on it own, some with ecu etc. mine is 1.8 petrol I've only seen hdi pugs, would the ecu work?

Any help grestfull, I don't really want to spend £100's with pug main dealers. :x

Before you buy anything, take the current ignition barrel apart. There's a clip thing, holding everything together, that sometimes slides out giving problems like you are experiencing. I had a similar issue but wasn't able to turn the ignition ON. Once I took it apart and tightened everything up with a squirt of WD40 in there, it has been perfect for years.

If it's really knackered, then yeah, you'd need the BSI and the ECU to go with it.

I had a spare one and my key didn't work in it.
