Air Compressor Advice

Post by FarmerPug »

I bought one of these off ebay the other week:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261198036366? ... 1497.l2649

It arrived with a broken cover and missing air filter so the seller refunded half the price i.e. £45 which was decent of him, i got a tyre inflater and blow gun for it but i just have a question, will one of these run an impact wrench, here is a picture of the attachement end for the inflater and then the impact wrench beside it.

I have no idea about compressor fittings, would it be possible to put one of the smaller connectors onto the end of the impact wrench, which is one i get the lend of, it belongs to my uncle its a draper i think

I've just picked up a similar compressor to the one in the link
And tried running a windy gun on it .. it won't loosen a wheel bolt

I think you need a decent compressor for them
Either that or the windy gun I picked up from aldis is flocked. :?

The couplers shouid change over , put a bit of PTFE tape on the thread as they can leak,

I've found that with the cheapy 8-10mm hose the air flow isn't up to running an impact wrench. Also, I particularly enjoy the way that there are so many different but visibly similar couplings, they could do with a little standardisation...

Aldi is selling a box with the full kit
Compressor pipe
Air line
Spray gun
Waxoyl gun
Air duster

I changed the pipe over easy enough to swap over the connector on the compressor
But the tank on the compressor is too small, not enough wind,

The kit is only 20 quid at aldi so not much lost,
The coupler for the compressor cost me 8 quid from halfords

The small compressor is only any good for blowing tyres up :(

We havent got aldi here, although it is offered down south. Ive been in one in monaghan and it was remarkably like being in lidl

I took a connector off one of the paint guns and tried it on the impact gun, slightly different threads but it did spin the gun.

Was at the car boot sale, seen a packet of connectors but got pissed off with the travelling folk that are there nowadays selling shite tools

Would the 24 litre tank be too small to drive an impact wrench, the compressor is rated at about 9cfm and most impact wrenches require about 4-5cfm the only time i need an impact wrench is for the crankshaft pulley bolt

But as soon as I fire the windy gun up the compressor fires up again
Tank ain't big enough is what I thought but icouid be wrong,

I wouldnt mind the compressor running, its an oil lubricated motor so it wont take no hurt running, and the crankshaft pulley with the right address on the impact gun comes off in less than 20 seconds (although thats when using the massive compressor down at the farm), but its handy just having a blow gun and tyre inflater about the place.

I've had another play with the windy gun,
I got it working but only if I crack off wheel bolts first with the wheel brace :frown:
Tried all the settings but. No difference .

Only got it too save faffing about with the wheel brace so its pointless
I'm going to grab a decent compressor once I've got some spare funds

My saviour is my electric impact wrench: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... act-wrench

Big, heavy and noisy, but it'll do everything you ask of it
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

My next door neighbour has 2 of those size compressors linked to one common hose,he can run a windy gun and do a bit of spraying aswell without loosing too much puff,he already had one and someone gave him the other. The one i've got won't run a windy gun although when you look at the specs it should,i've bought one of those 240v jobbies in the link but haven't used it as yet.

Them 240v jobbies seem like a great tool with plenty of power a mechanic up the road has one and it can remove almost any nut, although he says it can snap heads off bolts a bit too easily.

Id love one of these though, if only it was a bit cheaper:

I have one of their 18v hammer drills and its a very good tool, the batteries are interchangeable with this.

I bought one of the electric ones for my crankshaft pulley a few weeks ago - it is excellent
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

I went an ordered one of them clarke yokes, couldnt be bothered spending any more on pneumatic stuff, the wee compressor is ok for blowing up tyres, or blowing dust.
The clarke is a heavy machine at first but feels well enough made, i havent put it near a bolt yet but the motor seems to have plenty of torque just spinning it.

I discovered that on full lock, there is sufficient space to remove the crankshaft pulley using a CEW 1000 - very handy because my extension lead was just that bit too short so had to drive the car a bit closer whilst I loosened the bolt then drive it back to clear the way. :)
