The wheel arch liner needs to be removed, but this can be done with the wheel still on

I managed to remove the crankshaft pulley from a Shitroen Xantia just by going through the gap in the liner - turns out my extendable wheelbrace fitted perfectly over the nut and undid quite easily... 8)

i've got one of these - undoes any nut/bolt that I have put in its way so far....

Paid about £90 - handy being cordless as it sits in my race van normally for quad meets, ideal for changing sprocket's or wheel's.

The compressors are ok for small jobs. We have the aldi special - better than our power devil one, but for some jobs its still not enough - we are going to go bigger and better soon with an industrial one, purely as they are quieter, much bigger tank and the ability to drive several tools at once...

ES9J4S?

My V6s - both ES9J4 - had crankshaft pulleys held on by 4x 13mm nuts

Found the full specs of it -> http://www.maximpower.co.uk/railway/master35wrench.html

There is also a video of it -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cosSLG0WW8E

 WOW what a machine, you wouldnt take long getting crankshaft bolts off, it would probably loosen every bolt as far as the gearbox aswell :cheesy:

What's the difference between an impact wrench and something like a hammer drill?

An impact wrench is like putting a spanner on a nut and hitting the spanner with a hammer to undo the nut... up to hundreds of times a second. It can put a heck of a lot of torque on the nut - 500Nm is roughly like a 50Kg (110 lb for imperialists) weight on a 1 meter long breaker bar. That may not sound like much, but on a foot-long wrench, it'd be 3-400lb!!!
For comparison, wheel nuts should be tightened to between 80-120Nm depending on car. On top of all that, the rapid application of such force makes it much more effective than merely a long bar

An impact driver for reference, is a hand tool that looks like a large screwdriver, which accepts a socket. You put it on a nut, hold tightly and hit with a big hammer as hard as you can. As the end is pushed in, it puts a rotational force on the nut via the socket, and puts a shocking force on everything, especially your hand
