Can anyone help me out with a valuation?

Post by grey »

Greetings folks, much to my chagrin I'm going to have to sell my 406 and downgrade to something smaller :?

Could you give me a rough idea of what to expect for my motor? Spec is:

2003 406 2.0 HDi 110 SE
79k FSH
Auto wipers
Auto headlights
Auto folding mirrors
Auto rear view
Auto climate/aircon
Electric front seats (with folding armrests)
Half leather interior
Electric windows all round
Alloys (with good Pirellis all round)
Satnav (still got the remote)
6 disc remote multichanger
Cruise control

The car itself is absolutely immaculate both inside and out and I've got both keys and all the manuals/paperwork etc that I got when I purchased it from the dealer. I don't know what the colour code is but its a really nice grey and this was the main reason why I bought it as I'd never seen this particular shade on a 406 before.

Cheers

You'd probably be looking at about £1,200.00 really.

Thing is, you say you want something smaller (presumably cheaper?) but what else could you get that does a better job than the 406? you could end up with a right shitter if you're not careful :|

A 406 like yours, with low miles, is well worth holding onto at the moment.

Don't sell it! You will get far less for it that it's worth....

The main reason for getting rid of it was it really doesn't get driven that much (as is evidenced by the mileage) and I was offered a really cheap Smart car. Was trying to kill two birds with one stone and free up some cash and get a cheaper runaround but for a grand I might as well keep it and throw an engine remap in it.

The problem is, like Cap'n says, the 406 is worth more than the price suggests.

There's also the 407 out there which even the early models are cheap now so the 406 is beginning to lose favour. If you're generally ok with the car you may as well keep it really :|

Oh, I agree - there is a definite deviance tween value and worth these days.

I was thinking of using hdi-tuning.co.uk and getting their 140bhp upgrade. Has anyone had this done and if so, what kind of MPG and performance difference can I expect?

Thanks

A remap will make an enormous difference all round, I've always said the HDi is seriously de-tuned from the factory so that it lasts well and is reliable; I think it is well proven by now so why not unleash a bit more? with regular oil changes ans sympathetic used it won't hurt.

One tip though; get the engine mounts checked, especially the rear lower one as these are very weak and will likely give trouble with the extra power trying to yank the thing from its mounting. Also the clutch; if it slips at all now then it definitely will with the remap.

Great, I'll get the mounts checked. They should be fine as everything in the car has been maintained as regular as clockwork.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a lovely example of the 406, well worth hanging on to.

A good 406 will go for £2000, a crap one for £300 and everything in between.

A smaller Hdi90 306, maybe a couple of years older with higher mileage is worth £1500. A good car but I would stick with a car you have looked after and have trust in.

You may save a few pounds on tax but lose out on comfort, practicality, reliability and reasonable economy - even with a re-map.

Well obviously we're a bit biased...

But as said: 406s are a long way under-valued and for the likely sale price the best thing you can get for that kind of money is... a 406.

Low mileage means that you won't save anything on fuel.

Therefore it's down to how much you save on tax and insurance and servicing -- which is an easy calculation.
If you're obsessed with getting a stamp in your book every year then a Smart Car may turn out to be quite expensive?

I used a chap on this forum to do my remap - very happy with it. Check this - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20009 - very happy with them!

Like the guys and young lady (ish) have already stated "Don't do it"

I went to a timber merchant today and got 6 foot fence panels and 8 foot posts in mine without the use of the roof rack... I'd have looked a right twunt trying to do that in a smart car.
