From bad to worse, now have engine immobiliser fault.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

From bad to worse, now have engine immobiliser fault.

Post by bytecode »

Hi,

It seems that in my attempts to diagnose and fix my supposed MAF sensor faults viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20132 by cleaning all of the earth points (the one by the drivers-side engine mount, the one by the clutch slave cylinder and yes - the one by the battery box) I suddenly realised what I'd done - I had stupidly disconnected the battery but from the chassis end of the negative cable - without the 3 minute rule.

I only realised what I'd done as I was rebolting the cable to the chassis. All of these years I've worked on the car and managed never to disconnect it.
  • I tried to start the car but get "Engine immobiliser fault" on the MFD.
  • I have the key symbol on the dash board.
  • I can't clear fault codes with PP2000.
  • The "plip" built into the key doesn't work now - I guess it's out of sync?
  • The engine turns over - but naturally it wont start.
  • I carefully went through the BSI Soft reboot process three times - but I don't get a "bong" from the COM2000 when I turn on the head lights. The lights do come on.
  • Searching through PP2000 I see a fault about no transponder signal - I forget the exact words.
  • I've tested the COM2000 by holding the "Automatic lighting" button on the stalk - this elicits a "bong" when switching between automatic and non-automatic lighting modes in tandem with the relevant display on the MFD.
I'm really getting stressed now - this is our only car - we live in the sticks, I'm supposed to be going to work tomorrow and we're supposed to be taking the out-laws to France in our car in less than two weeks.

So, what next?

My immediate plan is that I'm going to following the three minute rule, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and then attempt to go through each and every fuse.

The worst part is that I can't even test whether cleaning all of the contacts has made difference to the original problem - that of the engine reporting MAF/Antipollution faults.

The earth points were pretty manky, not surprising for a 12 year old, 51 plate, HDI 90.
It's an RHY Bosch ECU.

I did the same 18 months ago,i had to get an auto electrician out with PP2000 to rematch the key to the car,i heard somewhere on pp2000 theres a part for mating keys to the car,i think it was under "new car" or something similar, sorry to be so vague but I've never done it myself.

Hi grasmere59,
Did this result in the Engine Immobiliser Fault message also?

As I understand it, I need a 4 character code to even allow me to re-mate my key to the car - is this correct?
If so, does anyone know whether I have to request this code from a dealer or is there another source?
Can PP2000 find the 4 character code?

Yes the immobiliser fault came up on the MFD and the plip didn't work, you will need the 4 figure code to pair the key up,i doubt if it's there but it should be on a card in the car's handbook pack.Peugeot can supply the code but they charge for it,there are sites on the net that can do it,google vin to pin or similar.

Hi Nutski - thanks for your response.

I tried texting and emailing them for a quote approximately six hours ago but still have had no response.

I didn't want to just spend the £33 on paypal only to find that they were no longer in business - so I asked them to quote for the PIN, but as there's been no response I guess that they are on holiday or no longer provide the service, so I guess I'll wait it out until Peugeot are open in the morning to quote for PIN provision instead.

One thing that worries me is that when I turn the headlights on after reconnecting the battery, I don't get the bong noise - does that only occur if the ECU is unlocked?

Hi everybody,

thank you for your help with this one.

I now have a car that is willing to start the engine, thanks to the lovely girl in the service department from the nearest Peugeot dealership sourcing the key and transponder codes for £24 (inc VAT).

Once I plugged in PP2000, navigated to the activate keys screen, popped in my code and followed the onscreen directions, magic happened and the car stopped sulking and let me start it up - just as the sun came out and birds started singing.

So now that nonsense is over with, I'll be going back to diagnosing my smoke/performance problem this evening.

:)
