53.3 MPG

Post by Welly »

I did a 200 mile jaunt over lincolnshire this weekend and tested the MPG on the HDi 110.

The driving conditions were perfect for such a test, very long FLAT roads 50 - 60MPH and VERY light throttle. I was trying so hard to get the MPG as high as possible it was actually wore me out.

Remember that Top Gear episode where Clarkson took an Audi A6 V8 TDi to Scotland and back from London, well I was driving like that (apart from there being 2 adults, 2 Tea Pot Lids, heater on, heated seats on, and all lights on).

Anyway, the result of my efforts, and believe me I tried very hard, was 53.3MPG.

Pretty good, but not as much as I thought. Bearing in mind I never went over 2000 RPM once, and I was going for a record.

It stabilised at 53.3 after 1.5 hours and if I reached a slight incline and squeezed the throttle it went down to 52.3 average.

The car was actually doing some weird things too, it sounded really clattery and if you suddenly accelerated it took a while for it to catch up and belched out some smoke, like the ECU was running on a cruise setting for so long it had altered all its usual settings??

Whats your best? and should I stop acting like your stereotypical ''I drive a Diesel and I'm going to boast about my MPG even though my car still costs a small fortune to run compared to your nice quiet punchy, BHP'y, Petrol'' owner :|

I know this is going to annoy you Welts... but in dry weather my PETROL turbo can average around 48-52mpg at indicated 60mph on a moderately flat motorway in a truck's slipstream :cheesy:

Economy is utterly destroyed when I have to speed up or slow down though. Typically I read sub-10mpg doing a slow pull away from traffic lights  which is why I now take corners as fast as I can because I don't want to have to speed up again after...

The best I got from mine was 49mpg on a long run from Newcastle to Manchester and back to Newcastle again.
I was keeping it under 3,000 revs.

That's the thing, my newly fitted trip computer lets be see I'm getting that incredible figure on motorways (about 115 miles a day) but my average (measured by trip comp and working it out from the petrol receipt) is dropped down to around 38 by my car's terrible economy when accelerating from 0-30 (5 miles a day)... That's where you diseasel guys score big over petrol engines :(

I was visiting Chapel St Leonards (some relatives) I'm still trying to work out where all my money went in the amusements and why my coat still smells of chip fat from a Cafe we visited.

One positive thing was being able to witness every single breed of small mutant dog on the planet, one was being carted around in a childs pushchair and another was nestled in the arms of a very large Tatood 'Tarmaccer' from Nottingham

Very strange on the Lincs coast.

I got 53 out of my '90 in normal driving, tank after tank, and 70 point a bit on a disciplined and heay traffic enforced 60 all the way jaunt down to my Dads in Ashford. Even repeated larruping failed to get it under 46, but being a deadly trained plod pursuit/response and TPAC pilot I know that making swift progress involves a lot more than just mashing the loud pedal.

On the Diesel Driver site recently was some numbty waffling on anbout how wonderful his Fraud Fusion was for averaging 48 mpg between fills. I took great delight in telling him how pathetic this was compared to my 5 seat, large booted 8 year old HDi, which was all the sweeter for him being one of the crowd that dis the 406. Tw4t.

Sweet :D

The 406 HDi holds the world economy endurance record for a production car on public roads, a summat like 1800+ km to a tank at a 79 mpg average., and Ford can't even manage 50 mpg from a 'modern' small car. Pathetic Fraud rubbish. The 407 HDi V6 sportrnic holds the proddy autobox economy endurance record, but I can't remember the details.

I have very recently (two days ago) completed a long journey also. I drove from Maidstone to Plymouth and back (which I believe is a total of 560 miles), and I managed that on just over 3/4 of a full to the brim tank.

Not sure what that MPG equates to but I was crusing and really taking my time, bearly touching 70mph at some points.

Not bad for a 2.0 petrol motor. :cheesy:

I find the fuel gauge extremely misleading. The top 1/4 takes *ages* to disappear then the rest zooms down... Then of course there's all the stuff under the red...

Turbolag, Im shocked at the MPG you get. Is your journey to work a nice kind of cruise at a steady rate?

I think maybe the economy improved with the chip fitted?

My daily run to work is the worst possible (at the moment) start car, drive 3 miles, switch off car! it's barely upto 70 deg mostly. This will increase to 12 miles soon so that might help.

I normally get 33 in the winter and 37 in summer driving like that. On a run I get 53.

Do you think thats a bit low for me?

Indeed! And I am now officially playing fuel light bingo until the 25th! Not sure how much further I can go with what is left. Trip computer is saying 43 miles but it has been saying that for a week now!
