Radiator fan (2002 HDi)

My fan doesn't work, I have 2 (I think) fault codes relating to it, I had a quick look at the wiring when I first got the car and found it's been butchered at some point, it looks like a different fan has been fitted and the wires cut and joined rather than plugging the new one in, different connector possibly, but apart from that it looks like the photo of the loom posted above, with the round grey relay plug.

That's on an '02 HDi 90, RPO 9692.

I think in my case it's either the shoddy butchery of the loom or the fan itself, it's on my to do list!

The later 90 and 110 use either a 1253E4 (350 watt) or an 1253E6 (450 watt), presumably needing the more powerful fan for hot climates. The 2.2 HDi just takes the E6 (No, I don't know if there are any other differences).

Does this one look like the 350 watt fan? I've nicked the picture for future reference anyway.

Sometime ago I was looking for a 1253e4 ( 350 watts ) after my electric fan seized.

I managed to find a new one in the south of France and got it posted for 140 euros inclusive.

It was exactly the same as the photo and a genuine peugeot. The box that it arrived in had 2 stickers on it 1253e4 and 1253e6

Not 1253F1? I'm finding them sold in a few places with all 3 numbers on them but I've no idea if it's an equivalent without the wiring or something

it looks like i will have to jump onto this band wagon as well. from memory the fan has never run on my 90 hdi for the entire time i have driven it.

a quick bit of testing later i still have no fan action going on.

I pulled the grey relay, opend it up and checked it out and all is good

I have 12v perm feed to the relay. Pushing air con on gives me 12v to the trigger on the relay. Pulling the temp sensor gives me 12v to the trigger of the relay so all the internals seem to be working from ecu's and switches. Bridging the relay 12v live feed direct to the feed to fan produces no spinning of the fan leading me to thinking a fubar motor on the fan or a bad earth point.

the only thing i have forgot to test was if the feed to the motor was going direct to ground ( i will test next time i get out to the car)

Thinking back to school days ( a long time ago) since a motor will spin with power supplied to it if you spin the motor it will act as an dc generator can i put the meter between live and ground and spin the motor to get a reading or will i need to spin the motor up quite a bit to get a reading ?? to eliminate a fubar motor

Unfortunately it's not that simple because there are electronics in the fan unit.

You can instruct the fan to run from PP2K, which may give a clue. But it sounds like it's time for a new fan

Firstly, this thread has been very helpful in gaining some knowledge on how the radiator fan circuit works as I am trying to diagnose an issue on my HDi 90.

On mine, the radiator fan seems to be temperamental (discovered while trying to find out why the air con turns off when the engine temperature is around 90C and also had couple moments last year summer when it crossed 90c while in traffic). Still I have not found where the issue is for sure. But I would like to share some extra info I have come across while searching around.

Managed to find and get 2013-11 Sedre working and find the circuit for my car (RPO 9747). It is attached below. It finally includes the circuit inside the grey relay by the battery (which steve_earwig guessed was part of the 1513 circuit).
