help needed
hi all,my 2004 406 1.9 diesel estate is doing my head in. sometimes runs perfect for a day or two then suddenly the temp and fuel gauges drop to zero and at the same time the engine starts to over rev .sometimes the over rev is constant and sometimes when i stop at lights or junctions etc. the revs pulsate, sounds like the line up at the start of a race. my mate is a fair mechanic but it has got him stumped. the fault is the harder to sus out with it being intermittent. i think the problem started after i had a new heater blower control module fitted but have tried taking it out but the fault still remained. one other thing after driving 20 miles or so there is a whining noise seems to come from the n/s rear wheel. any ideas or advice is most welcome. this car has only done 64000 and has never missed a service from new. best regards to all.
Re: help needed
hi the whinning sound try looking in the hand brake drum as ive found over the last few months or so that the pins that hold the brake shoes have a annoying habit of popping out of the backing plate & therefore the pin & spring get ground and mushed up inside the drum causing a squealing grinding noise. worth a check maybe

Does the whining from the rear wheel stop if you gently take up the slack on the handbrake? The 406 handbrake is kind of its achilles heel....
As far as over-revving, mine did it when I first collected it and drove it home but it turns out the throttle clip was 1 notch too close to the throttle housing. Normally the clips are set too far from the housing which loses performance but being too tight makes it over-rev randomly.
Good luck.

i think you are right re the over revving ginger, as my mate altered the clip when he was driving the car and thought it was underpowered. so it looks like he has over adjusted the clip. i am away on hols at moment but will check it out when i get back. thanks a lot and best regards
