Rad fan not working.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Rad fan not working.

Post by YJ53CGA »

With this burst of warm weather I've gone and had my AC gassed up. Great all gassed up and no leaks :D but when the AC is turned on the fan won't kick in!
I've had a look at the fan it self and it spins fine. So I had a look at the cable up to the relay and that also looks ok but I then looked at the relay (the one that hangs on the side if the battery I assume). Now I'm I right in saying that the two bigger blades holes on the plug for the relay should carry the 12v supply? If so then there is no power getting to them. I'm guessing that the fan has not worked for a whole because my 406 never goes above 90. Can anyone tell me if they have ever had this problem before and how did you overcome it! Also I can't seem to fine a fuse for any of it in the hand book!!!

Thanks a very over heating 406 driver :cheesy:

It might be OK. On later, fully-mux systems, the rad fan doesn't turn on automatically with the aircon, it's speed is regulated by the engine ecu to control condenser pressure and engine water temp. You may well find it's only needed in fairly extreme conditions.

Do you know anyone with PP2000? - with this you can prove the fan operation via actuator tests and monitor condenser pressure / evaporator temperature as well as compessor and fan opearation.

Take it for an 'enthusiastic' 10 minute drive then leave it idling on the drive, you'll soon find out if the temp will top 90. Mine only ever kicks the fans in if it's left ticking over or crawling for a long time.

On the 1.9 you can unplug the connector by the thermostat and the fans kick permanently for a test, not sure if the HDI engines are the same.

On mine if I put the A/C on full the fan cuts in after approx 2 mins and cycles on and off when needed,i've never seen it come on with the engine temp as it never seems to go above 90 even if I leave it idling for a long time. They are a known problem on the later cars for some reason,i personally think it is because they are on so infrequently they seize up from lack of use.
