WANTED: Rear brake backing plates

Post by highlander »

Hello,

I am going to get the car in to swap out the rear wheel hub bearings, and this is therefore the perfect time to swap out the brake backing plates, since they need to come off anyway.

Mine are rusty as f*ck, so I'd rather put new (or very good condition) ones back on in their place.

Can't seem to see any on eBay right now. Anyone breaking a 406 with rear disc brakes? Doesn't matter what size engine or what year the car is, I think, as long as it has rear disc brakes it should be the same throughout the range.

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Graeme, just thought I would say you don't need to change the backing plates to do the rear hub / bearings, you can even leave the handbrake shoes on. The bearings and brakes need to come off to do backing plates, so either do the plates first or just do the bearings and leave back plates until new bearings wear out again....
You are right however, good back-plate are like rocking horse sh*t...
I am swapping mine soon as I have some replacement ones, will see what my old ones are like close up before deciding to sell or throw them out.

Check out Captain Jacks latest thread, he recently did his and did a ' how to ' video at the same time.

If you want to keep the car another couple of years then your only option is to buy new and push for as much discount as you can. Used ones are only going to be in the same state as yours give or take :|

I know that used backplates are likely to be rusty too - if I can get some that are at least slightly strong, I might be able to spend some time scrubbing off rust and then applying anti-rust coating before handing them over to the garage.

I e-mailed Ade yesterday asking him if he has any that are salvagable and how much they would cost. No reply so far.

Took us ages to find a replacement 2nd hand pair for the 2.2. Both of ours came from Ade in the end, we phoned and he said only 1 in 20 are serviceable, and they go on eBay. Set up a "saved search" on eBay and we've now got two pretty decent ones, one still waiting to be fitted.

Has taken us getting on for 6 months to get hold of them though!

Has anyone checked if these things cross over into the Shitroen range? they might be cheaper by some weird pricing quirk :|

The only car that has them is the 406 (I looked when my D8's started disintigrating :( )

Dammit! Both sold!

Annoying because I e-mailed Ade asking if he had any - TWICE - and never got an answer. Now I find he had and they're both gone on eBay!

Car is booked in on the 20th for getting the rear wheel bearings replaced - hopefully I'll be able to lay my hands on some by then, and I really don't want to have to spend £170 on new ones.

That was 2 days ago.... I'll pm you if any more come in the email but I reckon appeared, bought & delivered before the 20th is a bit of a tall order. If I were you I'd hold off on the hubs as if they have to come off again to fit backplates there's a chance they'll get damaged.

Yeah, his email-fu is weak :(
