No. They're not coded to the car. Sounds like your problem might not be the injector - does it run differently if you disconnect the plug to this one?

Have you tried a leak off test?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Not tried a leak off test,it's going on a diagnostic machine at a local diesel specialist recommended by the RAC on Monday so maybe find out then what's up with it,haven't got the time to mess with it,I work 27 miles away and need a car!when you unplug the injector for that cylinder it doesn't make a difference to how it runs,do it on the others and the car runs worse so they are working but the new one isn't?? No compression on that cylinder perhaps,no blue smoke but plenty of diesel smoke, you can smell it.

Hope it goes well for you, paulm.
Sounds like it is more electricl than mechanical.

I have a related question. Has anyone tried to change the injector nozzles themselves? Keepting the body and changing the nozzles. I had thought it would be a very difficult job but after reading comments elsewhere I am intrigued. Even second hand injectors are £50 each for the D8 and they are definately on the simpler side.

the thing with diesel injectors is that the needle get calibrated by shimming the solenoid or spring to get the correct opening time and there are some other calibration pins and shims, the parts are so small its hard to see them and are easily contaminated with dust, salt from your skin and other detritus
