VERY STRANGE LOUD BANG

Hi,
Every so often I get the wierdest loud bang noise when driving my 406. It sounds like a loud stone hitting the windscreen, but it as happened on a few occasions, scares the sh*t out of me and I dont know what it is.

Do big stones have flown up and hit my car yet (touch wood), but it is very peculiar.

Car runs fine, so it is puzzling me?

Anyone have a any ideas?

Hey Pris,

Where does the noise seem to be coming from? Under the bonnet or nearer the back?

I name that tune in one. I've seen this posted many times on the 406 coupe forum. It's down the the stereo, and people with the problem have always said it sounds like something hitting the roof. Here's the message

The bang is caused by the chassis of the head unit, where the sides meet the rear with a clip arrangement. This does not fit tightly, and creates the noise when the two sections part company and then come together again, thus opening and remaking an earth connection. I have managed to recreate the bang (and crackling) by flexing the joint.

The solution is to affix a small length of single core insulated wire between the earthing post on the back of the unit and any screw point on the side of the head unit chassis. Use a couple of solder tags to secure the wire properly.

The result- 2 days later and not a single crackle or bang. Problem solved.

I get this load bang too, scares the crap out of you, it's worse if you've not been using it for a while.

I used a tie wrap to stop it moving, but that only worked for a couple of weeks. i will have to try this fix

Ben, the noise appears to come from the front of the cockpit, and sounds like a stone hitting the windscreen.

Neil, come to think of it, that is probably what it is. I shall try and have a look sometime this weekend if I get time. I'll let you know how I get on...

Two long thin screw drivers into the holes in the radio fasia and push them outwards and wiggle radio forwards. May need to do it one side at a time.

Very easy if you have the right screw drivers and have done it before.

YOu could also use Phillips radio removal keys from somewhere like halfrauds... they cost about £2.99! I used to use a wire coat hanger and cut two pieces and then bend them into an L shape for easy removal.

To resolve the issue permenently fit an aftermarket unit

They are so cheap these days I don't know why people stick with the original units.

I have an after market unit, i didn't fit it for a number of reasons:

1. I have had two cars broken into after the radio (only a basic MP3 head!!)
2. I would loss the remote control
3. I would lose the screen
4. I have the JBL system so would have to mess with the wiring to fit one (i know its not hard but...)

Also then have to remove the front panel every time I get in and out of the car which is a real pain.

I do miss having the MP3 head thou, I never get round to changing the CD's in the changer.

I usually leave my stereo fascia attached. Nobody's going to nick it while it's parked outside my house and I park at a secure car park for work. If I'm say parking in the street or somewhere equally dodgy when I go out at night, I'll either hide the fascia under the drivers seat or carry it around (usually in those circumstances I have a female friend who'll shove it in her bag!)

If you can work out your signal inputs for your CD changer you could adpat the plug to accept an aux source like ipod/mp3/ players without the need for the fm modulator.... dude you just sound so lazy !

I used to have an aftermarket head in my Focus, piss easy to get out I imagine because it was nicked twice. The second time, the fascia was off but I'd foolishly left it in the glove box, so they had a go anyway and found it.

And most of my Bruce Springsteen cd's. Goddammit. I think car criminals should swing!!
