Blimey, Welton. 33mpg in winter? I'm currently getting 38 point a bit out of my Mi 16 (on supergreen), so if a high revving sparker can beat your figures then you may have summat amiss I've not done a long run in it yet, but reckon i'll have it beyond the mid 40's on a careful motorway jaunt.
My journey to work is 13 miles of fast country B road, and 2 miles of (usually) busy congested stop/start of slow running A road, with a final mile of urban running.
Try doing a 3 mile run twice a day at 60-70 MPH, you'll soon be in the low 30's I reckon.
I think it's down to driving style though, I tend to enjoy full turbo/torque in 2nd, 3rd and 4th everytime I drive. If I kept it off boost more I could probably get more MPG but I would be bored.
I should not have bought a Diesel really, but I panic-bought it from running my Mazda 2.5V6 before (which did 17MPG winter and 22 summer). Even when my workplace moves in April I will still only be doing about 10,000 miles a year, not enough really.
I'm reassured somewhat on a long journey as it goes up into the 50's

OK so I just worked something out... and my maths is crap so it must be wrong!
Some help with this would be great:
After the head recon and new headgasket etc. I took the car on a 160+ mile trip, it took less than 1/8th of a tank to get there... all motorway driving @ around 2900rpm which is 70ish, I was driving between 60 - 70 mph always under 3000rpm until a few overtakings were required so based on this here is my maths:
70 litre tank - 165 mile Journey
70 / 8 = 8.75 litres per 8th of a tank
165 / 8.75 = 18.86 Miles Per Litre
So a gallon is 5 liters which would imply that my car on this journey would do:
18.86 x 5 = 94.3 Miles to the gallon!
This can't be right, I know my maths isnt great but damn this isn't wrong is it? I know the fuel guage isn't spot on but even given that it has to be within a +/- 5% tolerance doesn't it?

You can't really rely on your fuel gauge. My gauge hardly moves from full for ages, then the last qurter just zooms down.
The only true test is to brim the tank, then brim it again after some general mixed driving.
I don't even think the fuel computer is acurate, many VAG owners complain of the computer being 2-3 MPG too high when worked out using the brimming method.
The down side, Brimming the tank costs a lot of chedder, best done when one has been paid

My daily commute to work is 75 miles. I average about 43mpg. That's mixed driving and of course those stupid traffic jams in Swindon. But whilst in Europe on the autobahn, I was doing constant 85mph and I've done 150 miles without the needle moving off the bottom at all! By the time it reached the 3/4 mark I've done about 250 miles and 400 by 1/2 mark. I filled it to the brim and that worked out at around 51mpg! The best I've done on UK's lousy roads was 47mpg on a drive to Heathrow.

im still wishing i bought another diesel after my last one died, my commute to work is only 3 miles, yes i am bloody lazy for driving , but its bumper to bumper the whole way there, and sometimes my economy has been as good as 15mpg!

I know, I know.... I can't help it but I might be changing jobs and going for a 45 minute commute! Unless the customer support services manager for europe changes his attitude. Last week I used less than a quarter of a tank for 5 days worth of commuting to and from work!
