problems with rear window washer

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

problems with rear window washer

Post by darrenwall »

hiya everyone , great site very informative .i know my questions not about a 406 but i read on here about the BSI and was wondering if the 306 has one ? my mother has got a 2002 306 HDI 2.0 90bhp and recently the wipers have been playing up , when u want to wash the back screen , the rear wipers come on but the front jets spray and nothing comes from the back , at the same time the front wipers dont come on . the front washers work as they are supposed to but the problem with the rear has baffled me . i have had a look at the pump and it all seems fine. can anyone give me any ideas cos when it coems to electrics i dont have a clue lol thanks

Welcome to the forum. if the front washer comes on when you try spray the rear wipers, this'll be the wires are crossed on the washer motor, or even the pipes on the motor have been swapped. The front and back washers often use one pump, but it pumps in different directions.
[edit] I've just read it again, and it could be the pump is only flowing in one direction for some reason. I didn;t read the bit where you said the front works normally.

Otherwise, the problem could be with the stalk itself, and the connections in it. Do you know of anyone with the same car, or even another Peugeot that wouldn't mind you playing about swapping stalks?

When you mention the BSI's, I'm not sure about a 2002 306, but we used to have an N plate 306, that had the stalk where you twist the top to get the rear wiper to wipe, and twist it further to wash. On this one at this age, the stalk was directly connected to the wiper (the good ol' days!). I'm not sure if the later 306's would be going through a BSi, allthough wouldn't be surprised.

the 306 only went up to 2001 and never had a bsi, i had a volvo v40 that did just this at work, it turned out there was a wiring fault from the wiper stalk for the front washers to the pump so a dodgy garage boged it up and put the rear wiper washer motor plug on the front washer pump, so you could still wash the windscreen, but if its just started doing it, its most likely as neil says, a crossed wire somewhere, i would pop over to www.pug306.net for some advice

oops wrong car

Post by darrenwall »

my mistake sorry i meant a 307 , i assume its got a BSI or something cos when you put the wipers on or press the horn or flash the lights there is a small delay in anything happening unlike my 406 where it happens straight away . also the car hasnt been anywhere near a garage since we have had it so the problem has just come on its own

ah yes, all 307's have a BSi, and this is more than likely your problem, but unfortunatley only the dealer has the capability to diagnose this, but it does sound like its up the problem, i dont know why but the 307 seems to go through BSi's more than any other peugeot, even the 206

Not about the problem sorry, but I think that delay with the horn and lights really annoying. It's all down to multiplex wiring, which is supposed to cut down on he amount of wiring in a car. Everything has to go through a poxy computer and is then sent to the horn/lights etc. When I pull the stalk quickly for a quick squirt of the washers on the coupe, they don't wash, pull again and then you get about 2 seconds worth.

Yeah the washers thing is annoying, I don't even bother trying to do a small squirt anymore....

But the horn is most annoying, you're no longer able to give a short beep to your mates on the pavement, you end up giving a considerable blast to the old couple 20 feet away

I'm sure one old dear shat herself recently

starting full CAN cars is alot like this, you turn the key and it seems like your waiting about half an hour for the starter to engage, its even like this on the very latest CAN cars, which have high and low priorty and high and low speed networks, on the new 207 the starter signal has to go through both network speeds 256kb's and 512kb's and comunicate with almost every module in the car, so from the moment you put the key in the ignition starting takes about 3 seconds longer :frown:

If the washer problem on the 307 is the BSI, it's probably just worth putting up with. Dairees not long ago had to change one on a 206 and didn't get much change out of £400 I think. His symptoms weren't bearable though (no wipers and often wouldn't start). If it's just the rear washer, just keep a bottle of water in the car. I think you only need front washers for the MoT.

yep you only need the front ones for mot, and it doesnt matter that you have to put the rear one on to get them to work, as long as they work thats good enough

In the original post, the front ones work as normal, so it'll just be a case of putting up without the rear one.
