gear oil leak
After changing the clutch on my 1.8 petrol, there seems to be a bit of a leak, and it seems to be coming from the half moon shaped tin plate on the bottom of the box on passenger side, the piece where there is a couple of 11mm bolts holding it.Any ideas folks.
Re: gear oil leak
The tin plate you can see here, next to the exhaust pipe? (pic from a V6)

if so, then if it's definitely gear oil (who can mistake that smell...) I'm afraid you're in for bad times. The oil leak will be from this:

which is the oil seal from the gearbox to the bell housing which is what the clutch release bearing slides on:

However, if you're unsure about the smell, it MAY just be the case that you've knackered the (rather brittle) slave cylinder, which on a D9 is only about £20. Or it could also be the bottom end bearing behind the flywheel.
If you do need to remove the gearbox, I *strongly* recommend a new release bearing to save yourself needing to do the job a third time

Hopefully your fix won't be a drastic as this.
