Carb Cleaner / MAF Cleaner..?

Post by trufflehunt »

A can of EGR or MAF cleaner seems to retail at about £10 a can.

A can of 'Carpride' carburettor and choke cleaner is typically about £1
at local budget carstuff shops.

It occurred to me that I might, in fact, be looking at exactly the same thing.

Has anyone any experience of these carb cleaners ?

EGR cleaner is powerful stuff, it's designed to clean everything on the intake side of the engine including the MAF, throttle body and EGR valve....unless you are cleaning the EGR system then don't use it.

Carb cleaner is the right stuff for cleaning the MAF (and the throttle body).

You can use brake cleaner to clean the MAF, but carb cleaner is best, in my opinion.

I also used brake cleaner for my MAF, as it leaves no residue. Works well too..

I haven't actually reached into the depths of my Scottish pockets for a £1 yet, but I've read
the intructions on the carb cleaners.

They're not very informative.

To clean a MAF with the stuff, would I treat it like cleaning an EGR and just spray into the air intake with the engine running..?
Or would I remove the MAF, and spray into the MAF delicate things, let the cleaner do its work, and drain away out in the open..?

You can spray onto the delicate wire, but never touch it, I spray it with the engine off using carb or brake cleaner, just let the stuff evaporate, but be very careful.

Only spray EGR cleaner with the engine running and only in 2 to 3 second bursts until the tin is empty.

Just thought I'd mention.
I'm not say in anyone's dumb enough to do it but

I've seen someone using egr cleaner and after theyve sprayed egr cleaner in they've reved the car

Result was-big cloud of smoke the car is in my yard with a blown engine.

I bought a can of that £1 Carpride carb cleaner,
and used it on the MAF sensor today.

Decided, for the sake of a few minutes effort, to completely remove
the MAF so I could spray it out in the open. Gave the MAF a number of spray bursts
through the interior. Good amount of oily mess came out the other side, until what was
coming out the other side.., ran clear.

I'd estimate each can was about enough to do, maybe, 2 MAF's.
