Diesel particulate filter?

Hi.
I just joined the forum as I have recently acquired an '02 plate 406 2.2 hdi.
The car arrived with issues - sorry to be another newbie instantly wanting advice!
I have a plan of action, but would appreciate input from you guys to confirm I am going about this in the correct way.

The main problem appears to be with the anti-pollution system. Difficult to say exactly what as the LCD display that describes the fault is obliterated, leaving only one line legible. And unfortunately my OBD2 code reader won't communicate with this car.

The symptom is a permanent and almost complete lack of power. By that I mean the car accelerates very slowly, and can't maintain even 40mph up a modest hill.
My suspicion is that the particulate filter is almost completely blocked (prompted by the warning light that flashes at me, top right of the instrument panel).
I can hear the turbocharger whistling, which may or may not be a good thing, but at least this tells me it is working to some degree.

Having read a few threads within this forum, my plan is to remove the guts from the particulate filter, and install a modified ecu file.
I have already ordered a Galletto 1260, which should be arriving tomorrow.

Do you guys think this is likely to cure the lack of power? If so, what is the best source of the modified file?
Is it the engine map file that needs replacing? If so, I assume it is no more work to improve the fuelling and boost pressure at the same time?

Anyway, I think that's probably enough for my first post.
Any advice you can give would be welcomed.

Hello Pete,

Firstly, which LCD is yours? Does it have satnav, twin trip computers, remote etc? If so, these are getting expensive (£300+) and hard to get hold of. However if it's the other type, they're relatively easy to come by and you could replace it at little cost.

It sounds like the car is in limp-home mode, which limits things like torque and engine speed. This is, as you say, likely due to the DPF system thouugh it is impossible to be sure without reading the fault codes. Someone near you (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid= ... 1b9c&msa=0) with Peugeot Planet 2000 (Peugeot/Citroen dealer diagnostic kit) may be able to help you out and read the full fault code information, after which you'll know much better where you stand.

I wouldn't worry too much about hearing the turbo, I can hear it in our 2.2 HDi and everything's working fine.

With regards to smashing the DPF out, you've basically got the gist of it. Smash the innards of the canister to pieces and replace the empty canister back on the car, and then use Galetto to flash a new engine map file so it doesn't try and regenerate the DPF. There are de-FAP* files around either for the stock power (136bhp) or 180bhp - someone on here will be able to supply those when you need them.

Hi Pete and welcome to the forum.

I agree with everything Jon says and would add that a blocked DPF will give you difficult starting and possibly lead to turbo damage if ignored, so try to address it sooner rather than later. As your car is already in limp mode, I can't see any reason not to remove the DPF element straight away, at least you remove that risk.

Thanks for the replies.

Then I think I will set to and remove the filter. Does anybody have problems passing the smoke test at MoT time after doing this?
I was planning to do the software myself, so the offer of a replacement file is interesting to me. Can new members use the PM system straight away?
I have to say I am slightly concerned that the turbo may have already been damaged before I got the car - there is occasional whiteish smoke on the overrun, usually when backing off after a long period of on-throttle.
I shall remove the filter and see if that symptom continues.


Regarding the LCD display, it has a GPS logo showing on the left hand side of it and the date, time and outside temp showing on the right.
In the right hand side boot wall is a cd unit with a Navtech sat-nav disc inside. Can't see any controls for a sat-nav though. Is this where the remote you mention comes in, Jon?
I don't have a remote either... At least I haven't found one yet.

No issues with the smoke test, mine have passed 4 MOT's at different garages, never a problem.

You're describing a 'type C' MFD, which needs a remote control to set. It's normally possible to pick up a r/c for about £30 ish. I suggest borrowing someone else's first to see if you think it's worthwhile.

The Galletto just arrived, so I'll see if I can get it working before wasting anyone's time with PMs.

This is the first diesel car I've ever owned, so I'm on a bit of a learning curve.
Usually I prefer large petrol engines, but a new business venture sees me wanting to reduce my fuel costs.
I did own a 406 saloon about 10 years ago; I was impressed by that car, even though it wasn't my usual fayre - this is what persuaded me to look for a Peugeot once I had decided to convert to derv.

I hope this one proves to be as good as the last one once the initial issues have been overcome.

Nice colour and the same interior as mine.
Really low mileage and very tidy too.
Definitely time to introduce M. le Fap to a large hammer and chisel.
If you can, arm yourself with 4 M8 x 40 stainless bolts + nuts in case you have to cut the originals off, (as I had to last time).

He says he's done quite a few before, so it shouldn't take him long.

Yes, that's my Stag. It's quite a nice one, without being so perfect that you're scared to use it.
The best thing about it, though, is most definitely the noise it makes!

The bimmer was my everyday car until I got this Peugeot. It's a 330i automatic, which is a tad expensive to run.
I got made redundant ten days ago, hence the switch to diesel.
Don't feel sorry for me though. I wanted to leave that place anyway, and the redundancy money is enabling me to start my own business - something I've wanted to do for a long time.

Good idea about borrowing a remote, though it might be worth getting hold of one permanently. Those Type C displays are stupidly expensive from dealers, but they do pop up occasionally on eBay from time to time. I saw one go for £80 a couple of months back.

Thanks for your pm.
I tried to reply, but the message is stuck in my outbox, not in sent items.

Briefly, I had issues with reading my ecu file via galletto last night.
75% of the way through copying the file it threw up an error on the pc software. The airbag light also came on during the copy??
Every subsequent attempt to read or copy the ecu file failed - not even 1% copied. The galletto's obd connector got pretty warm too. Don't know if this is normal. The red light on the obd connector is working, but not much else seems to be.

Maybe the galletto cable is fried. I assume it's just a serial/usb converter inside the connector?
I bought it from a uk seller through Amazon, so at least I have a fighting chance of obtaining a replacement if it is faulty.

The car still runs, so I don't thing the ecu file is corrupted.
