I have the 1.9td Executive, 1996 plate (D8), 265,000 miles on the clock.
I have the car on a 10,000 miles service interval and it burns almost no oil between services.
I have been getting a fair bit of black smoke developing recently. If I rev up sharply from idle, it is like Indian smoke signals. The engine pulls ok and the exhaust is clean at constant revs. I recently fitted some "new" injectors and the engine seems slightly more positive. The back of the car is getting a light cover of clear oil, feels more waxy than oily and it does not smell of diesel.
I would like to keep the car for another year and the MOT is due in 6 weeks.
Any pointers to a possible cure?
Regards,
Colin.

Re: Black Smoke
there is most likely a build up of soot and carbon on the back of the valves and intake ports starving the engine of air, an Italian tune up will elevate the problem an amount, if not correct it
Re: Black Smoke
Mine smokes a bit due to leaky boost seals, might be worth checking.

Re: Black Smoke
Thank you for the replies.
The car gets a regular blast on the motorway and there are no other signs of a carbon build up, but I will do as you suggest.
I will check the hoses on Saturday but not sure I understand the details of the system well enought other than to check the tightness of the clips.

Re: Black Smoke
there is a seal where the intercooler mounts to the intake manifold that may be leaking i would also replace that

Thank you for the replies.
I checked all the hoses etc but it made no difference.
There was some oil on the engine, so I convinced myself one of the injectors had come off its copperwasher, so replaced the washer and the fire seal. No difference. Replaced the hoses linking the injectors. No difference.
I stood and looked at the engine, revving it up and down, while half the Sioux Nation gathered around my smoke signals.
And then I seen it!
A bubble appeared on No.4 injector, on the injector body itself!
Fortunately I had an old injector, changed it out and problems all gone (for the moment).
