Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
Depends on whether you use the basic cost of 'box + fitting, (in round numbers about £350). or count the clutch & DMF too, (nearer £700).V6Exec wrote:Obvious question; based on before and after MPG, what is the break even point for the gear box?
Anyways, I do about 21k/year. if we say 44 mpg before and 47 after, at £1.40 / litre, annual saving's about £300. Clearly. it's not a formula for saving money, but it's so much nicer to drive - for example, no engine noise at 110 is pretty cool.
That's what I like to hear.nutski wrote:Sounds good Doggy, mines getting fitted on Friday and if i get a similar improvement mine will pay for itself in 6 months!

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
Doggy, i was looking on service box characteristics to find out the gearbox my car is fitted with, and it says ML5C. Is that the same as your original 5 speed box?

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
Frank, my old one was an ML5C too, but there are some differences, The clutch housing is different, (I think), to accomodate the 2.2's bigger flywheel and clutch, also I understand there is a small difference in the final drive ratios.
ML5C's come is several versions, mine was a code 20LM02, whereas I think yours will be a 20LM04

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
It says transmission BVM5 on service box, no other codes unfortunately, is the 20LM02 (or 20LM04) stamped somewhere on the car or gearbox.

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
It's somewhere on the gearbox casing, (can't remember where, but I'll try to have a look at the one in the shed at the weekend).
Also, on servicebox, if you look up spare parts, gearbox, then pick the diagram entitled 'manual gearbox' it should show the gearbox code, (or at least the last 4 digits, along with the part number), e.g. 'LM04'.

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
Is the LM04 a down-right reverse, and the LM02 a lift and top-left reverse?
Maybe an easier way to tell which is which...
Mines a LM02 which is the same as Doggys old one, lift and top-left reverse.

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
Lift for reverse = ML5C, aka 'compact', reverse back from 5th = ML5T, (as far as I can tell), seems the boxes are virtually the same, bar reverse interlocking.GingerMagic wrote:Is the LM04 a down-right reverse, and the LM02 a lift and top-left reverse?

You need to be careful, Frank.FarmerPug wrote:Ill need to look at 407's then for a 6 speed box then?
a). jasper5 reckons the DMF/clutch on his 2.0 16V HDi is a lot bigger and the housing therefore might be too.
b). many 407's have 16" or 17" wheels, so have lower final drive ratios to compensate - you could wind up lower geared if you're not careful.
My 6-speed came from a late 2003/early 2004 C5, which came with 215/55/16 tyres, (like a 406 coupe or late 406 SE), so has the same final drive ratio, same 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th, a fractionally lower 5th gear and obviously 6th is higher.
Worth your while reading this thread from the beginning and checking out this one from the coupe forum http://www.406coupeclub.org/PHPBB3/view ... 22&t=42765

Great write up and result, can you do similar to a 2.0 HDi?

Re: 6-Speed Gearbox
Honestly don't know, I would be amazed if you can't find one that would fit, but in my mind at least, there's not enough justification unless it delivers much better cruising, (note comments about ratios / final drive / wheel sizes).grey wrote:Great write up and result, can you do similar to a 2.0 HDi?
