406 hdi 110 slow/underpowered

Post by stoney »

Just bought a 406 110 hdi estate and it seems to be pretty slow/underpowered, its pretty driveable as it is but no feel of turbo kicking in and really sluggish up even the slightest of hills.

I was left standing by a 405 1.9td estate so I think summits up!

Certainly shouldn't be like that.

Is the EML light on / any messages on the MFD?

Worth checking the fuel and air filters, also look for any boost leaks / check if the hose from the intercooler to the manifold goes hard when you blip the throttle.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

after sodding about for ages trying to find splits in vacuum pipes, checking filters etc etc I finally found the problem to be......a slack throttle cable!

Slack throttle is a common cause and often overlooked

Add your location to your details and maybe someone local can help.

When I got my first 90, I spent ages looking for the reason why it was slow - turns out its because the engine was too small for such a big car.. :cheesy:

I've been wondering why mine is slow. Thanks for explaining why; it's been bugging me for over 8 years!
