Diesel Leak - around fuel fiter

Post by exec406 »

Hi

I have a 406 2.2hdi 2003 with the Siemens fuel filter housing. I'm getting a fuel leak (dripping) from the bottom of the fuel filter.

The leak doesn't start straight away after you fire up the engine but after about a minute or so.

I've had the fuel filter element replaced before, and I've read on here it's actually best to buy a complete new filter housing with the filter already fittedviewtopic.php?f=7&t=4291. Apparently the housing can get damaged / cracked when changing the filter element only.

I've priced a Siemens fuel filter housing with filter already fitted this morning from my local main dealer and it's around £76 inc VAT.

Is fuel leaking from the fuel filter housing quite common if only the element has been replaced before?

Thanks

The filter you're looking at there is a Mahle. It should have a seal on it which comes with a new filter, I wonder if this is damaged or missing. The usual reason for changing the whole thing is worries that crap could get the wrong side of the filter while it's being changed and end up in the HP pump. They don't normally leak.

If it is indeed cracked or damaged new ones are rather pricey but there are loads of 2nd hand ones on ebay for about 25 squids (search hdi fuel filter housing & check the picture).

OK thanks for that. The majority on there seem to be the Bosch version of the housing. I have the Siemens one - I take it the Siemens housing was fitted to 2003 406 2.2 hdis / to end of production?

I'm looking for this one:

There only seems to be new ones on E-Bay of this type.

Thanks

All later HDis, 2.0 90s (Bosch and Siemens), 110s and 2.2 (with differing change over dates  ), as well as shedloads of other PSA cars (and FIATS no doubt).

Although some of them seem to lack the boss on the bottom for the water-in-fuel sensor :?

I've just been checking and it looks like the one for the 90 Siemens is different, it looks the same but...

Thanks but looks like there's a crack on the bottom of the housing. I've managed to source the part, a Siemens 190165, at £22 less than main dealer price.
