406 sounds rough

Post by crad2 »

Need advice please re 406 1.8L 16v 1996. Petrol
Engine is sounding very rough lately and cant really pin it down. Been looking on youtube about the crank pulley and a couple of the videos sound much like my car.

The cars shown are diesel though, does the petrol use the same crank pulley anyone know?
Any advice welcome, thanks.

The 1.8 are solid crank pulleys
Its the diesel hdi ones that break up...

Be more than likely a tensioner or pulley failing if your getting that sort of noise

Thanks for reply. I'm not sure it is a solid pulley, it looks to me like this one which has the rubber insert.

Remove the aux belt and run the engine, if the noise has gone then it's probably the tensioner at fault or the alternator pulley, if the noise is still there then it could well be the crank pulley at fault.

Thanks, Going to get a pulley and hope. Does seem noisy around that area and considering age of car.
