Fan relays - 3 boxes, anyone know what is what?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Fan relays - 3 boxes, anyone know what is what?

Post by Sonia406 »

Rwb told me about the fan relays and where to find them.
There are 3 boxes in there, does anyone know which is which?

Image

I believe myself the top one (seen without a box on this picture) is the slow fan relay.
I also believe the bottom green one is the fast fan relay.
Question is, what is the blue one?

I replaced the slow fan relay, £6 @ Peugeot.
Fan is still failing to fire up with PP.
There was a small 'nick' in the wires, I say nick, no wire was shown but the plastic insulation was crimped almost.

Bailies has already suggested to cut the wire and solder it back in, going to try and avoid doing that...

Another question:
PP refer to the fans as Fan 1 and Fan 2 (Fan 2 being the slow speed one). Are there really two fans? If so, where is the other hiding?

Thanks in advance.......

The Xu10 diagram is showing me 2 fans with 3 relays, while the ew10 diagram is showing me 1 fan with 2 relays

If it's got 1 fan then it must have a resistor block, did you check this?

No, hold on, using an earlier RPO for the ew10 I get a diagram with 1 fan, 3 relays and 2 resistor blocks

Unfortunately Sedre doesn't give me any locations for semi-skimmed components, but if you can read any numbers off the wires I should be able to tell you. Oh, engine and RPO pretty please with a cherry on top :) (no point me posting up a diagram if I don't know it's the right one...)

The more I read about wiring looms and diagrams, I am convinced that who ever said 'peugeots are just made with the parts that were lying around in the factory that day' are right......
How do I check it's a resistor block

What's RPO stand for? Sorry, I am sure I've asked before too!

Yes, several times I think. The search says 3. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=19141&p=196882&hilit=+rpo#p196882

Don't worry about the engine number, you let it slip in a pm - it's an ew10

Resistors, as I said Sedre don't tell me :frown: There's a how-to in the KB for some but they look like they're where your relays are :?

I thought it was Ford parts that other manufacturers buy up by the skip to use on everything else :? Pug are the opposite, if they can redesdign something 18 times during a production run the will  Take these fans, there's all sorts, depending on when the car was built it could have one fan with two or three speeds or two fans with two speeds or anything else you care to think of.

Yep, EW10J4 RFN engine..

Well I know for sure that the relay I changed (top one) was for the slow radiator fan as Peugeot demanded to know the numbers on the old one and matched it up and verified what it was for...
They also said the other green relay was also a 25amp and I assume that one is the other fan (fast fan)
Maybe the blue is the resistor? I have no idea.......

If it's like the diagram I was perusing earlier there's one relay/resistor each for both low and mid, one is switched in for low and both in parallel for mid. Then there's a third relay that bypasses the whole lot for full.

Can I be a pain and ask if you know which of the engine bay fuses are the fans? I guess if we are going through a process of elimination I really should of checked those first.... Why is it fuses are never thought about?

I think about them a lot, I'm sitting in a house where hardly anything has an individual fuse...

That cap fits. Are the two resistors those things to the left of the relay compartment? If I recall when Dave had on out there was a coil of wire with a wasp stuck in it.

IIRC the RPO is about 8700

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Ah, that'll be the kiddies. It looked like the other side in the How-To.

My stab at an rpo was 8500 so not too far out, that diagram is probably the right one for her car (and there's even a chance it's correct!)

thats the same fan as mine , you are right the 2 on the left are resistors
they rot like fook but luckily not too expensive from the stealers

Nice on Lou, cheers :cheesy:

So these must be the ones on the left in her pic:

Btw I notice Sonia's got photographs of PP on her blog but all have the RPO clipped off: is this something about not asking a lady her age?

Nah, that was crap. Try again:

Much more legible this time. Ok.

BM34 : engine slave unit 34 fuse(s)
1320 : engine management control unit
1304 : engine management multi-function double relay
8007 : pressostat
1220 : engine coolant temperature sensor
1509 : high speed fan supply relay
1514 : mid speed cooling fan supply relay
1508 : low speed fan supply relay
1506 : cooling fan 2-speed resistance (Sedre makes no distinction between the two but if you look at the diagram A has a grey connector while B has a black connector)
1510 : fan / (although if you didn't spot that one you should take your brain back to the shop for a refund :P )

For some unfathomable reason, I felt compelled to redraw that so I could see how it's intended to function.

Low speed needs MF2, low speed relay and resistor 1506B, (black plug).
Mid speed needs MF2, low speed relay, mid speed relay and both resistors
High speed needs MF3 only

Which, I think, is what you described earlier - now what was actually wrong with it to start with? :?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Oh lordy :( It's gotta be one or both resistors rusted out and/or wiring damaged and/or pressostat malfunctioning and/or a blown fuse. I'm just firing up the crystal l ball...
