How to disable satnav?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

How to disable satnav?

Post by grey »

How would I go about totally removing the factory fitted GPS module or disabling it?

Thanks

Simplest thing to try would be disconnecting the power lead from the satnav.

Mine never almost works and usually reports, 'Navigation CD Rom unreadable' on start, then does nothing more. Guess you could get this by ejecting the disc.

If you want a more permanent 'fix' it probably needs the option in the BSI set to 'absent' with PP2K

I would simply replace the MFD with a non-satnav one, cheap on ebay, and then forget you ever had it. When you scroll through the trip computer options, the satnav won't appear at all. You could unplug it if you like..

My built in satnav is ace, almost pinpoint accurate and works on names and numbers, not postcodes. Its only a pain when trying to find a house name if it has no number...

Why do you want to remove it???

I just don't like the idea of a tracking beacon in my car, especially after reading the Daily Mail article about what actually occurs with the mountains of data that is kept on us.

Oh dear! break out the Tin Foil hats

It doesn't work like that  GPS is passive. You cant be tracked by having a receiver, only if something broadcasts that signal (like a mobile phone)

I know, hence the Daily Fail ref. I just want to get rid of my Satnav as the random polka dot/jazz music it makes gets on my nerves. Admittedly its a random occurrence but it happened about 3 times in a row on a recent trip, very irritating when you are the middle of a nice piece that's just building up to a crescendo, hence this thread.

Well you never know...

I have never heard mine make that noise, then again I have never asked it to route anywhere outside of playing with it to make sure it worked...

Under normal operation it doesn't show anything on the MFD and never bothers me... I woudl consider it, if not off, then definitely asleep. Perhaps you have a route stored in it it is trying to get you to all the time?

Mine has recently taken to reporting addresses in Spalding, Lincs while I'm near home. :?
Wonder if this is the new 'stealth' option?

It took me ages to work out where the hell that occasional little burst of music was coming from in my car, I was getting almost disturbingly obsessed with finding the source until I found it was the navigation system.

Since I cleaned the navigation drive in the boot, it has never done it again. I can't even provoke it by tapping the end of the light stalk like I used to. Odd!

 I know the feeling, hence the thread.

Looks like I'm going to have to take the drive back out again and have another attempt at cleaning it in order to solve this auditory interruption.

As someone who is reasonably new to the 406... maybe?

My last Pug was a 205 GTi, so not too familiar with the more modern wheel types.

I've had my 406 for 8 years, and I heard this for the first time this January! I know it's to do with setting the volume of the sat nav lady. Is it related to the button on the indicator stalk?
