Lights on when nobody home
Hi,
just picked up an 02 406 LX HDI that has a couple of minor, he says hopefully, issues.
For the dashboard readout – no speedo, other lights on I will be checking all the wiring and connectors and looking under the carpets for damp spots and corrosion on the connectors, however there is one issue that is puzzling me…that I’ve managed to stop happening, but not without side effects.
The main issues was that, after locking the car, the headlights would come on after a couple of minutes – headlights only, no tail lights.
I resynced the fob and could lock/open the car with the buttons when complete, but when the lights came on, the fob wouldn’t work, so the car had to be unlocked using the key and the lights would go out when the door was opened.
I saw a post on the ‘fixya’ website that alerted me to the fob reprogramming, but it also mentioned removing F23 from interior fusebox.
After several failed attempts I consulted the hand book and removed the fuse in, what I thought was the F23 position…odd that it was not a fuse and had ‘SH’ on it.
Anyway, this stopped the headlight coming on, but seems to have disabled the central locking (at least)
I now realise that the fusebox was inverted and I have removed the shunt the was between F5 and F7?
Is there a proper fix for this and how do I find out what this shunt was controlling?

That shunt seems to cut off a lot of stuff, com2000 and BSI for a start (which is why the c/locking died). No easy fix that I know of, sounds like the "follow me home" wants you to follow it to the loony bin

Can't add much to steve's thoughts really, you could try a BSI reset, (in the Knowledge Base, I think).

Reset the BSI and it seems to take longer to happen...but that could be my imagination.
Will start taking up carpets tomorrow - now that I have finally located the appropriate torx bits!
Anyway, is all the stuff on the drivers side of a RHD car, or is it behind the glove box - not 100% sure from reading some stuff.
One thing the relays are clicking away behind the steering column/fuses when it happens...also what should the heater temperature setting start at, it's at 56, which I presume is farenheit - failing that I will be nice and toasty in the next ice age...assuming the electrics let the it work!

On my left hooker they're near my left foot, not sure on right hookers but I suspect they're a mirror image and somewhere near your right. It should be enough to remove the trim and pull the carpet up at the edge.

Well...set about the car this evening, if only the made it as hard for the water to get under the carpet as they do for people!!
Anyway, underside of carpet may have been slightly damp, brackets a bit rusted but no obvious signs of corrosion on the connector; dried it out anyway then put it all back together. Lifted the passenger side carpet...again, evidence of being marginally damp but no connectors - not that I was expecting any, but when in Rome.
One other thing I did was to remove the radio/cd player that had been fitted. Connected the battery again, then went through the BSI reset procedure and all appears to be fixed.
Now, wasn't 100% happy as to what had caused it, so again, went through the reset routine and when the batter was disconnected, refitted the radio...correct adapters though a couple of scotch lock connectors. Connected battery, sidelights on etc, etc and then resynced the fob, locked the car and waited...and waited..PING...on came the lights.
BSI reset procedure again, this time disconnecting the radio and reconnected the battery and so far, over an hour and a half later the lights are still off!!

Oops!
Some of the standard radio wiring is mux, to the uninitiated it can just look like 12 volt feeds but can produce some interesting effects when used as such. If it starts doing that again that's what you need to look at.

Cool, cheers. Will see what connections have been tampered with and try sort it before reconnecting.

The bsi and ecu work on the principle of receiving "messages" from the various ancillary electrical/electronic devices and if you're radio is not the bog standard 406 factory fitted and addressing the bsi correctly then you can expect gremlins.
Similarly if the wiring of the tow-bar electrics is not spot on to Peugeot spec..

I don't seem to be able to find a diagram that doesn't show a separate amplifier

Been ages since I've had a non standard radio in a car, or had to bother about the electrics ;hasn't half got complicated!!!
