Air con/cooling fan

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Air con/cooling fan

Post by hammerman »

Hi to all, been a while :cheesy: My air con has worked fine since its re gass in may.But yesterday it stopped working.Well, not working correctly.I switched the air con when I left work(I always here a funny noise from the vents when I switch the a/c on,maybe the system starting up,always done this)heard the noise from the vents, but after 5 mins the air flow from the vents didn't feel cold.Pulled over,a/c pump running(on & off as normal)but cooling fan spinning very slowly & wobbley.I think the bearing has gone on the fan,but I`ve been looking for over a year for a cooling fan.Mine has 3 wires from the fan motor.(2003 53 hdi).Anyway, the system is working as I can feel a slight change in the air coming out of the vents,& it demisted the windows this morning, but its just not cold.Tonight, the a/c pump was engaging on & off,but the fan wasn't spinning.Untill I turned the engine off,the the fan spun for a few seconds.
To me,its as iff the fan isn't cooling the gas, hence hardly any change in the vent temp. But even driving down the motorway, with the wind flow through the front grill, the a/c is still not cold.
Could it be the cooling fan has had it,or a sensor or something.Any help would be welcomed.
Apart from that, and the mot next week  (new drivers seat frame needed)the car now has 190k on it & runs sweet as a nut.

I think your best bet is to track down someone local with PP2000 - this will enable you to test run the fan at all speeds, thus proving or disproving it's at fault quickly.

You can also monitor the a/c operation failry closely on later full-mux cars, you can display evaporator temp, condenser pressure, fan speed, compessor clutch status etc. IIRC, the clutch cycles on & off to maintain the evaporator temp at +1 deg. C and the fan speed is adjusted to maintain around 3-4 bar condenser pressure, (or something like that).

It's completely different to earlier cars. All of the above functions are managed by the engine ecu, (air distribution demisting etc. are managed by the climate control ecu).
