Which Starter Motor... ?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Which Starter Motor... ?

Post by trufflehunt »

HDI 110 2000(W)

Bought a second user starter motor on eBay. Described as for 406 HDI 1999 - 2004.
And as having been removed from a 2002 406 HDI.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221275932436? ... 1439.l2649

Been under the bonnet this morning, removed starter.

The part no. is Valeo D7R26 with 11 cogs.
The one from eBay is Mitsubishi M001T80481 with 13 cogs.

Went into Peugeot Service Box, typed in my VIN no. , and headed for the starter section.

List of about 15 different part number of starters, Valeo, Mitsubishi, Bosch.

Top of the list is Valeo D7R26,
and further down the list is Mitsubishi M001T80481.

It's a real long time since I studied mechanical engineering...,
but it seems to me that there is an area of incompatabilty here...?

Or have I missed something?

Update to this....

I was doing some more hunting around, and came across this..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-206-3 ... 45fd4d54de

Says that it doesn't really matter about whether there are 10, 11, 12 teeth etc, they all work.

It also refers to making sure you fit the locating dowel.

My Haynes manual for the 406 HDI also refers to a locating dowel for the starter motor.

I've looked inot into the psace in the bellhousing where the starter goes, and can see no sign of where a dowel would fit into..,
no sign of a dowel, and there seems to be no dowel in the starter motor..

What I do see is hole's) in both the old and replacement starters where dowel (s) might go...?

Pic 1 is the Valeo original.
Pic 2 is the Mitsubishi.

I didn't use a dowel when I replaced mine - didn't realise I needed to. I just took one out and put another one in, job done.

It can only fit in one place and in a certain way so I can't see how a dowel would be beneficial..? Maybe just bolt it in, wire it up and see if the car starts or if there is a puff of smoke... :supafrisk:
