Steering issue, or perhaps paranoia

Post by FarmerPug »

Im having a clunk sometimes when i turn right, its noticeable at low speeds, its not very loud. But it is there

The car had its wheels aligned a few weeks ago and i think this became noticeable after that, before the alignment the car pulled to the left, now it drives straight.

I also get a very minute vibration around and above 70mph, ive swapped the back wheels to the front and its still there, i cant really feel the vibration holding the wheel but when holding the steering wheel loosely it vibrates.

How would i know if the power steering rack is worn out, the ball joints, droplinks etc are all good, rocking the wheels about when the car is up on the lift doesnt seem to show up any issues.

Is there anything that can go inside the steering column?

Well I'd blame the lower ball joint but you say you checked that. PAS fluid or pump? Engine mounts?

Jack the car up with the wheel off pull and push on the hub - 9oclock and 3oclock and look straight
through at the rack. watch the inner tie rod, also check T.r.e whilst you are at it,

thats how icheck them anyway.others might do it differntly,

So far ive been under the car, checked all the joints and they are all still in good nick, done the 3-9 oclock thing on the hubs which did not reveal any issues, PAS fluid is all there, the bolts are in place tight

When the car is stationary the clock spring is a bit noisy but this noise seems a bit different to the clock spring.

don't know if it's the same rack but i had a 2.1td xantia with a knock similar to that and it turned out to be the inner ball joint on the rack , i could feel it if you crawled under the car and got someone to wiggle the steering.
was a fairly cheap and easy fix.
