Failing the MOT because of silly things

I had the car in for its MOT test, everything checked and ready for the test, and...

It failed because the headlight alignment was too low on the nearside, BUGGER, £18.50 down the drain, everything else got through ok, even the handbrake which had 22% efficiency.

That's a real pain Frank, I would expect most places to just adjust it for you FOC, or for a minimal charge and pass it anyway.

that is one of the most common fail items here in ireland, as its the quickest thing for them re-test but they can charge as it has to be brought in to be checked.

if it was too high you might understand but too low. Reminds me of my work landrover failing the DOE for a number plate that was too big

Ive heard of places adjusting them on the spot, the laugh of it was the tester checked the lights with the bonnet open, and the adjuster on the 406's lights are very easy to get to, he could have let me take an allen key to the headlight to adjust it there and then, but i think they just want reasons to fail you for the re booking fee.

But i must accept some of the blame, i was going to get the headlights aligned, but left it till this morning and there were no mechanics open that had a headlight aiming machine.

That is rather shabby I suspect your best bet is go someone else for your tests.

I went and got the headlights aligned at a mechanics in belfast, he charged me £10 for the privilege of turning a plastic bolt, i had already tried to set the aim by parking the car facing the shed wall and judging by how little adjusting he did i must have got it nearly there.

But the car went back to the MOT test, it is interesting to not that this morning the car decided to be french and illuminated the ABS warning light and that didn't go off until i disconnected the battery. Nonetheless it stayed off for the test, and the car passed.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
Must admit I wonder just how much Miss Pugs lights were out when she went through the MOT earlier this year. We adjusted her headlights only a couple of weeks ago. O/S seemed so low..

Sorry to hear about the ABS light, I can safely say I have heard and seen enough ABS warning lights to last me a couple of life times. Thank god yours got through the MOT without being spotted too! Hope it never re-appears for you.

Luckily i got the abs light out after cleaning the sensor, i have the set of sensors out of the 406 i broke during the summer just in case the light comes back.
