Crank sensor and rev counter

Post by munkymanmatt »

So, when I first joined this site I started a thread listing all the major faults with my new old car. It was a very long post
I got some advice about a little fault with my rev counter. Any time I leave the car in gear and take my foot off the accelerator (basically engine braking) my rev counter drops to 0 with a very audible 'tick' when it hits the bottom. It is extremely annoying!

I was told it was probably my crank sensor acting up. I'm not sure exactly where that is but I had a root through the engine bay today for another reason and think I might have found it in the process, or else it's for the reverse lights
Would I be right in saying this white plug is the crank sensor? it's sitting under the air filter housing, on the top of the gearbox.

Also I found this fella dangling around doing nothing above the gearbox, any idea what it is?

Cheers!

The white one is the reverse switch I think, it's too far away from the flywheel to be the crank sensor. Whereas that black one is just about spot on!
No idea what your dangly plug is from.... Might not be from anything....as it looks like it's got a dummy plug in it. They fit standard looms to the cars during production so some options won't have been fitted to your car, hence a redundant plug. Perhaps.

I was thinking the same, there's no pins etc. so must be useless.
Do you mean the black plug in the top left of the 1st photo? That's the dummy plug hanging down :(

Ahhhhh!
Didn't realise that!

The crank sensor will be just on the gearbox side of the join with the engine. It has to 'see' the gaps on the reluctor ring which sits next to the starter ring gear. So look around where the circumference of the flywheel would be and you should find it!
