Hello all.
Just a post to say how useful the site is and to introduce myself.
This is my 5th year with my 406 2.1 12 valve diesel estate and I must say it's a great car.
I'm a kitchen and bathroom fitter and I can fit all my tools in the back without lowering the seats.
It's comfortable, fairly economical, (about 45 to 50 mpg on average), it has a decent enough factory stereo and is fast enough on the motorway. In fact between 70 and 90 it has a turn of speed which often surprises newer cars. (That was on a test track, obviously, as I never go above 70).
It's done 302,000 miles and still going strong.
Great site, full of useful advice.

Re: Hello all.
Great news bought one 4 weeks ago, I must have bagged a bargain it has only done 116,000 and is 14 years old running great... so far!
Re: Hello all.
Thankyou all for the welcome. I've driven the new HDI engine but I still think the 12 valve 2.1 XUD is the best. So simple to maintain, bit of a pain to work on sometimes, but infinitely reliable and dead cheap to run.
As an aside, the odometer was fine up to 299999, but as it rolled over to 300000 the left digit forming the 3 failed and so the 3 is now a single vertical segment.
Some posters have suggested in another thread (How many miles has your 406 done?), that there may be a problem with displaying high mileages so there's your proof. (At least in my car).

Re: Hello all.
The power delivery between the XUD and the HDI engine is completely different. The 2.1 shoves everything into a smaller band and feels like it's going faster than an HDI. Though once you get used to the HDI it can be just as speedy.
That said, my remapped 2.1 was almost definitely punchier than the remapped HDI. HDI is a little more refined and doesn't sound like a run can of bolts!

Re: Hello all.
talking about working on them ,i remember changing the thermostat on my old 2.1td one winters morning and getting my sleeve full of freezing cold water ,thermostat is right at the back of the engine and you have to access it from underneath
Re: Hello all.
Captain Jack, how do you remap the 2.1 ? I thought it was too basic to remap?
I know what you mean about that narrow power band on the 2.1, reminds of my Renault 5 turbo which has a similar all or nothing performance.
If I can figure out how to upload a photo I will.
