Welly wrote:Nice little restoration there Waxy, I have witnessed that it is the angle of the headlight towards the sun which determines which motors are effected. The 406's headlights have an almost vertical face and don't 'see' as much sunlight as these cars with 'raked' headlight designs.
Indeed :) the angles do play a part, i.e Matiz, Micra's the fading is quite severe, lesser but coming up behind are the lights with angles similar to earlier model Focus, Astra, Clio, Passat etc. - early BMW's suffer as well. Even a few more Golfs around 07 plate are starting to suffer. - It's the top area of the lights in most cases that look damaged then it starts to spread down the lens.

Once they start going it's annoying to the owner as they can have a clean car but always end up with the lamps looking yellow.

Recently the stuff I have been working on are MOT failures. The fading/UV damage affects the beam pattern/spread from the lights causing a non defined beam but a fuzzy one which cannot be read. - So you can imagine at night on a country lane how non-effective and pretty serious this could be. - The Passat lights above for example had failed an MOT because of light pattern - a very annoying 'fail' for any owner. Their car could be in great condition and fail on beam pattern which is something that they have probably overlooked when doing their own 'pre-mot' checklist checks etc.

For albeit a pretty straightforward restoration that in most cases takes only around an hour for both lights. It's how they are UV protected afterwards that's important. - Most of the DIY hand kits are fairly useless, i.e they work but only to a degree - and offer no protection product to seal.

You are the headlamp master Sir!

We've got a sh*t Astra G at home (53 plate) and the uppermost part of the headlamps has gone shabby.

How can I attack them at home, by hand, without f*cking it up and getting told off by her indoors? I'm thinking fine sandy, lots of water, maybe some sort of compound? if you could recommend something I'd be grateful.

If it's slight UV damage, i.e not like the passat pics on here, then I'd probably go really gentle on them. Start with a 1500 grit wet and dry which has been pre soaked for at least 5 hours ( just something I do to make sure all paper is properly soaked, one dry bit of paper in the wrong place and it's an ooops ) - arm yourself with a spray bottle and continue to spray each stroke of the wet and dry on the headlight. - Once you have covered that, start the process again using 3000 grit paper. - Keep checking your work by drying back with a cloth to see how it's removing the damage.

Ideally you'd then need a rubbing compound to remove the sanding marks - by hand this may take a while. As mentioned here G3 can be used and even ( again has been mentioned ) toothpaste for that minty fresh finish.... something like Arm & Hammer which has baking soda elements in, or one of the 'teeth whitening' toothpastes.

For the sake of it I'd use G3 et al.

It will take a while by hand but you should get semi reasonable results. - I'd recommend that after you apply something like a car wax with UV protectors in - ok it's not the right stuff, but it will offer a layer of protection on an otherwise bare polycarbon lens.

Don't forget to mask around the area of the lamp before you start as when sanding you need to protect the paint and rubber areas around the headlight.

If they are quite badly damaged then longer work & machine restoration is certainly advised.

Use a blow lamp? :supafrisk:

The yoyo's go white at the top but it just polishes off with any old crap (4 dogs, 5 cats, there's plenty of it spare...) but I read the earlier yoyos had some sort of uv protection on the lights and this goes white permanently, requiring endless amounts of polishing (presumably until all the uv sh*t is polished away) or replacement.

Oddly enough, I was parked facing an XC90 t'other day and I see their lights do it too.

As you were :cheesy:

I think you'd do better to have Ahtray or Clito lights in there...

Cheers Waxy, might* give it a go.

I've even got some blue auto maskerage tape in my collection of 'detailing' paraphernalia.

*might: usually means arming oneself with information to do a job of work, then later not bothering to buy the stuff needed and then forgetting about the whole thing for months on end.

Mr Wellington... Where do you live?
You're more than welcome to borrow my porter cable DA polisher, some polishes and some abralon sanding pads!

I've had to do this to a few cars in the past! Quite satisfying but always worry about melting or warping the lense.

About 3.5hrs away, see you tonight :cheesy:

I've been thinking about getting a whizzy-roundy polisher anyway and also buying a 'practice panel' or two for training purposes

I shall probably call upon you or Waxy here for help as to what products I shall need for it too.

You sure your line of work is in HVAC?
I think you're some Government spy, maybe for an alien planet. Is it 3.5hrs via car or space ship?
Are you unauthorised by your alien government superiors not to give the name of your location? Or is it just unpronounceable?
