imobilizer light

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

imobilizer light

Post by frankie »

I put a new battery in my 406 and now the imobilizer light is on and will not start, if I disconnect battery and leave for a hr and then reconnect she will go no problem but when I stop after a few hrs the light is on again and no go. Any ideas on how to solve and I am way out in the sticks miles from a dealer.
Cheers Guys, perhaps I should mention the car is only used now and again and only for 4 or 5 miles a day.

Hi Frankie,

Not heard of this before, seems odd it 'recovers' if you take the battery off for a spell. It's not flat is it?

May help to know age, model etc.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Thank you for reply, she is a 2002 90bhp rapier estate with 246k miles, I have just connected up battery again and she started no prob and I went for a 10mile drive ans stopped and started again without any issues. The car is now parked up and I will check in a few hrs if she has put the imobilizer on.My everyday mode is a 2001 90 hdi but irish spec which does not have as much electrics or imobilizer fitted at all. The rapier is a uk spec car. Could it be a electrical short that has developed and putting her in to imobilizer mode but I assume if this was so she would not start at all. Anyway fantastic cars the 406, parts so cheap and ultra reliable until this glitch.

Maybe it's just coincidence - if it does it again pull the key out, calmly turn it upside-down, gently put it in again and slow as you like give it a turn. Mine does this occasionally, as do they all I suspect, and there's a theory that if you shove the key in and turn it too quickly the immobiliser doesn't have time to "handshake" and throws a wobbly.

Car was fine when I checked before midnight lastnight and started first turn of key, at 7.30 this morning immobilizer light was back on and no amount of fiddling with the key and battery will get it out, even when I pull out the key the imobilizer light stays on. Any new ideas ?

Car is going fine again, when I was trying to start it I had the bonneted opened up, but I closed it and imobilizer light went out and has stayed out with car back starting fine, I have used her today and yesterday and all seems fine again, my usual mode is the irish spec saloon I have which doen not have as much electrics as uk cars but the estate wth 246k miles drives much tighter and better than my saloon with n196k miles. So long for now and long live the 406. Thanks guys
