I have had two 406's in a row, a petrol engined one and my current 02 406hdi110 estate which has given me sterling service for the last 6 years - and continues to do so.
Living in a rural area i knock up quite a few miles yearly and i am keeping my eye out for another 406hdi110 estate, albeit the hard to find genuinely low mileage one. My initial thought was to look for an 04 one but i have been told that they have a Particulate Filter, is this correct ? If so, when did they start fitting them, my 02 model certainly does not have one. I want to avoid that undesirable (to the owner) 'upgrade'.
Your advice would be much appreciated. It might seem a bit strange wanting to change to another 406 but i just like driving them and in 40 years of driving the 406 is the first car i have kept longer than 2 years, bit like that comfy pair of old slippers maybe. lol
When did pdf filters start to be fitted to the 406hdi

Re: When did pdf filters start to be fitted to the 406hdi
Hi & welcome aboard.
While there are rumoured to be 110 HDi's with particulate filters, (aka dpf or fap), none of us have ever seen one. They are fitted to all 2.2HDi 136's, but can now be easily and cheaply removed.
Bottom line, don't worry about it.

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I know the 307 hdi110 of the same era has a FAP, so I really wouldn't put it past PSA to reach in the parts bin towards the end of production and pull out a 307/407 setup when they started running low on 406 kit...
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

PSA are not known for their logic, but it's hard to imagine them adding about a grand's worth of kit for no price hike.
Just possibly they did it to comply with Euro 4, that is if they actually built any 110 406's after 31/12/2003?
More likely lozz's link (above) is right - no FAPped-up 110 406's

Thank you all for your answers, i used the link and, as you all basically said, don't worry. I was not intending to look for the 2.2 engined car and that seems to be the only model affected. I did comment to my wife that i could not see any logic in psa adding a particulate filter at great expense to the 406 in it's final year or two because they are quite good emissions wise anyway.
Just out of interest, my son [who is a vehicle body repair tech] bought our 406hdi110 for me over 6 years ago with 53k on the clock and as a cat D write off direct from Universal Salvage as it was then, now copart. Contacting the previous owner i found out that the car had been sitting at rest at a traffic light when a little Suzuki 4x4 ran into the back of it. The car was pushed into the one in front, breaking the bumper a bit in the middle when it hit the guys towbar ball. At the rear the back bumper was cracked and the tailgate had a creased dent in it, though the framework of it was unaffected and it still sealed fine. No other damage at all. We sourced 2 bumpers, a tailgate and a Witter towbar from a midlands wreckers, same year car, same colour. 300 quid delivered for the lot. So a quick and easy fix. Since then i have added another 84k to it and the only problem i have ever had was the nearside CV joint breaking up ~ literally outside my brother in laws house where we were meeting up to go to a funeral. We stayed over night and my brother in law got a new driveshaft and CV joint the next morning and fitted it for me {he is a mechanic so it did not take long}. Not a bad record for 84k miles in my book. Having said that, i have just started having a little problem (that does not actuall affect me much as i live in a rural area and most of my mileage is on very lightly trafficked roads) so i will do my 2nd post and see if anyone else has had the same problem.
