Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
My old 1.1 Punto was great, loads of room in the engine bay for tinkering, lots on show and easy reach to learn some basics plus it drove/handled remarkably well.
Good on fuel as well if you didn't thrash it and low insurance/tax.
Mine didn't have ABS which in hind sight was a bad move as there wasn't enough weight in the car if you hit the anchors in the wet, it just slid along the road with me frantically trying to mimic ABS with my right foot. But if you get an ABS equipped model it'll be a great first motor.

Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
i remember when I got my first car in 96 a nova 1.0 it was £550 quid third party back then
insurance companies want you to have driving experience but you`ve got no chance of that if they won`t insure you the only way now for youngsters is to be a named driver but then they can`t use the car all the time

Crazy, how the hell can we get young people out working (and being able to broaden their search) with prohibitive costs like that

Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
strangest thing is ive got 17 years no claims bonus I`m currently driving a 53 plate mondeo ghia tdci and my insurance fully comp is £505 a year and I am struggling with that
Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
Its ridiculous isnt it, he's Just left school and didnt want to go to uni, so just like his elder brother we have got him on an apprenticeship with a good firm, he is bringing in a good wage for a 17yr old (£1000 pm) and is paying for his lessons/car himself, how are the young meant to achieve anything ion this country when he/others are penalized like this from the start.

Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
Trem, we found the cheapest for my 17 year old was LV, my son is now 20 and the cheapest is still LV
He started off at £4,000 and is now down to £900.
Micra 1.0 at first, now a Grande Punto 1.2 petrol.
He just got a quote for a brand new Volvo, £1,100.

Someone on another forum (actually the old time members will know him as Turbolag on here) suggested try a 107 to see if a newer car would be cheaper, nope it came back at £9916.36p
But he can get insurance for his 17yr old step-daughter on his 107 down to £1050 now thats just not fair.

Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
The new way around such extra-ordinary prices is to basically find a really old car ( pre '69 I think ) which will be MOT exempt, Tax exempt and qualifies for classic insurance....
Lots of young'uns are getting barn finds and throwing a punto engine in it....
My first car was a Morris Marina, insurance was £250 back in 1991 and I thought that was a rip off...
Nowadays I can insure a Ferrari for £650 if I like..
Only £200 more than my diesel estate..

Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
Insurance is just just stupid these days, my first insurance was a Fiesta that I inherited (so didn't pay for), technically zero value and £600 to insure, at the time I thought that was obscene
. Is anyone still doing small cars with free insurance? I remember Citroen were doing it a few years back.
I often think about the fact that the only way to get our kids on the roads is to put them in old, tiny little cars with absolutely no safety features, and even then a lot of people won't be able to afford it so we'll end up with even more uninsured drivers pushing up our premiums etc... it just doesn't make sense!

Re: Car choices for 17 year olds
Insurance is a scam. There's only really one or two actual insurers; all these other names are just trading names and brands. Hell, even the price comparison sites are owned by insurance companies - confused.com is part of the Admiral Group along with Bell, Elephant and Gladiator. comparethemarket.com is owned by BGL Group, whose core business is as an insurance underwriter, and they own the brands Budget, Bennetts, and Dial Direct, and they joinly operate insurance services with the Post Office, M&S Money, Bradford & Bingley, and Yes Insurance.
Oh dear, there's uninsured drivers out there. Lets put the prices up to cover that risk factor. Oh dear, there's more uninsured drivers out there. Better bump those prices up again. etc
What we need is for the Government to come along and offer a basic-rate insurance cover that provides 3rd Party cover only at a low flat rate, so that 17-year-old drivers can get their start. This flat rate should apply to 17-20s, and should cover unmodified cars with a small engine, no more powerful than 75HP, and with a total weight no less than 950kg, so that they don't end up getting a car they can't handle (or a car they can street race). The rate shouldn't be affected by the driver's gender, or by their physical location, or by their profession. They can then offer bolt-ons, like fire cover, theft cover, windscreen cover, etc. which can then vary according to where you live (crime rates vary according to location, etc).
Doing this should force the commercial insurers to bring down their prices in order to be competitive.
As it stands, the Government has written the insurers a blank cheque - they said "You must be insured in order to drive", but without setting any real rules other than financial ones, not moral ones. Someone needs to fix this.
