Possible Anti-pollutant fault and Limp Home Mode problem

Hi, my grandad has bought a Peugeot camper van, Boxer 330 MWB 2.2HDI, has had since June and has covered 6,000 miles, and it has an intermittent fault which Peugeot cannot replicate to diagnose and fix. He has had this fault over 20 times, and been to 8 different dealers who have been no help. When driving, an engine warning light comes on (stays on, doesn't flash) and engine rpms won't go over 2,000 and there is little power. There is no display which says exactly what the fault is but in the handbook it describes this dashboard light being lit up as "emissions/anti-pollutant fault - go to dealer". The engine stays in limp home mode until it is switched off, and left off for a few minutes, then starts up and runs fine but the problem keeps on recurring. Seems to happen more often when under load, for example on a motorway or going up an incline. Can anyone suggest what problem this is? This is his first Peugeot and 4th camper van, all the other's were Fiat JTD engined and ran with no problems and he is getting very disheartened with it. It seems like this is similar to problems I've read about with the peugeot 807 2.2hdi and citroen c5 2.2hdi, always anti-pollutant faults but no specific fix mentioned. People mention changing lambda sensors, unplugging fuel filter sensors, one guy changed an ignition coil, topping up Eolys fluid.. Can anyone help me out here?

the best thing to do is when the fault is happening drive it straight to a dealer without switching it off, there could a many number of things wrong with it, but without knowing what fault codes its logged it will be rather hard, the only thing i can think of at the moment is either the fap ecu or engine ecu is faulty or the particle filter is partially blocked

The anti pollution fault comes when the Oxygen sensor reading go less that 0.2 Volts.
The problem is in the fuel system( air/ fuel ratio).
Check the Fuel filter, injectors and the exhaust. You should look for something that cuts off fuel for a millisecond, cause this is what makes the ecu read a fault.

Thanks for your advice guys, I'll let my grandad know. I know he's taking legal advice on how to go about rejecting a vehicle, I hope it doesn't come to this as its a lovely van, just a shame the mechanics/electrics are pants!

Edit: And I drive an Alfa, you'd think I'd be used to bad electrics by now but mine is faultless, not a single problem after 112,000 miles. Some you win, some you lose 'eh?

Oh yes, just remembered something he said, it happens when fuel is between 1/4 and 1/2 full, if thats any help.

this is a hdi so there is no oxygen sensor
