Finding which engine variant.

Post by Quinny »

Off to the local motor factors today to get the relevant engine service kit for my new ride, purchased last Saturday.

As it's about 4 miles away, I want to make sure that I get the right fuel filter, and I'm sure it's a Mahle, as the filter housing is the same as picture number 5 here:

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=21186

Where will I find which engine variant I have, just to be sure, as the local motor factors closes at noon, and if I get the wrong one, it may be too late to go back.

Cheers ears.

It's in your chassis number but it doesn't help as the filters changed at various times around 2001 (so yours is almost certainly a Mahle) without changing the engine codes. The knurled ring on the Mahle is quite distinctive.

Hi mate - if there are 3 pipes on top then its a Mahle. I bought a Bosch one by mistake and manage to exchange it with no problems.

It does have a knurled ring on, so Mahle it is.

Cheers guys.

I've just updated the KB post linked above with some better pics (which I've stolen off of various places, including the 406oc 8) )

Excellent update Steve.

When I get to the motor factors, and he gives me my filter, I'll make sure that it's the round one with the little nipple on the top, and post on this thread accordingly.

I'm really sorry to do this, but I don't believe the Mahle filter KX201D in the picture is the correct one.

I'll call at my suppliers later and post a picture of what I believe is the correct one, if indeed it is....it may be another variant.

From memory, the part number is KX85D or 87D.

I think you could be right - from memory it has a parallel hole, about 20mm diameter, all the way through and no raised spigot.

Oops  I must admit it's a long time since I had one to look at so when a search brought it up I assumed because it looked fairly familiar it must be the one. Thanks for the heads up John!

But the Bosch one is correct, yes? I can well remember seeing that weird shape on the top one thinking something was amiss so I think it probably is the one, however, never having to deal with one I don't know for sure...

Bosch one is correct, yes, those bigger holes and a weird shape at one end.

The Mahle one has 2 small holes each the same diameter.

As I found out, the Mahle filter doesn't have the raised bit on as Jasper states, and luckily my supplier was very good, and I did end up with the correct one first time.

So now the air filter is done, along with the fuel filter, but the oil change will have to wait until tomorrow, as I got sidetracked doing other things as well, and the light is now fading to do it safely and properly, plus I've just come home in the car, and will need to let it cool down anyhow.

So, as promised, a couple of pics of the old filters. You will see that it is evidently clear, that this poor baby has been neglected:

I also took the liberty of giving the engine bay a good wash, so it looks nice and clean, but I have found out that the intercooler does have a small weep in one corner.

Still got the mouse under the bonnet though, and next on the list will be the auxilary belt.
