Very late Turbo boost

Post by oldcol »

Hi. My 02 plate 406hdi110 estate has suddenly developed a niggling fault. Now i have to say that as nearly all my running is on lightly trafficked rural roads the problem is actually not a 'Problem' as such. However, until a couple of weeks back the car was running fine and in fact it still runs fine, BUT it has developed a strange, to me, fault.
The turbo is not coming on stream until over 3000rpm. A local mechanic did a diagnostic check and the only thing that came up was Crankshaft sensor and Camshaft sensor not synchronised. He put 2 new sensors in but the same fault code comes up and the turbo still does not come in until 3000rpm. Have any of you had this problem and if so how was it resolved ?

Thank you.

That was my first thought too. It would be sensible to at least check the timing.

Problem Solved !

Big, big, big thanks to Contigo ! The problem was indeed the MAF sensor. Went around to a mates house and we spent about 10 minutes or so removing the MAF sensor from his 406hdi110 saloon and fitting it to my estate ~ instant fix. Turbo coming in just when it should again. Spent 32 quid for a new aftermarket one from a reputable motor factors, 2yr warranty, and a big smile on my face, the old girl is back to her perky self. The strange thing is that a 1600 quid diagnostic test unit did not pick the fault up.

A thank you also to my mate Eddy for the brief loan of his sensor .

Diagnostic kit will not show a problem with the MAF unless it is physically broken, if it has become dirty it can't read the airflow so in effect sends back false readings

Agreed, you'll only get a MAF fault if the sensor is disconnected or short circuited to either supply rail. Glad it's fixed though, well done :cheesy:

You must be mistaken or mad thats probably the value of your car unless it's in excellent condition & very low millage / one owner.

Did you keep the old MAF? You can clean it up a bit with brake cleaner, just be careful of the thin wire bits. Give it a go and if it works again it'll make a good spare.
