Thieving scum strike again

Post by Doggy »

One of the lads at work's had his cat/dpf knicked from under his Cistern C8, in broad daylight, on a fairly busy street. :x

He managed to bodge a straight piece of pipe in there to get it running, but naturally it'd gone into limp mode. I 'reached an understanding' with his engine ecu this evening, (it's promised to pull itself together, ignore the moaning additive ecu and apply all 109 horses to the business of getting from A to B in a timely manner).

Only problem is, his MOT's due soon and he's not entirely convinced by my assertion it doesn't need a cat to pass. He can't find a replacement for under £500, so can anyone confirm:

A). It'll pass so long as the smoke is OK?
B). Having one less box on the exhaust won't matter provided A) above and it's quiet enough?
C). Anyone know if there's a non-FAP version of a 2.0 HDi C8, who's exhaust would fit this '03 reg example?

Appreciate your thoughts people.

Sorry to hear that Doggy, in total the police told me that they did 27! in our village in under a week,
If you look at my old post you will see jasper5 posted a link to a youtube clip showing the tool the BASTARDS use, very easy under five minutes & no need to jack the car up
Any how mine has just today passed with a peice of st/st pipe in place I will post up a piccy, the only thing is I know the tester  .
But jasper5 & my teaster both say that it states in the guide that it's a smoke test only.

That's outrageous.

(A) That appears to be the consensus, but all the evidence I can think of is second-hand. Then there's the 'type-approved' swindle...
(B) IIRC there are noise limits in the MOT, but given that there's a back box it will be quiet.
(C) I'd look in ServiceBox but can't right now because I'm on the shitty old Mac and my bookmarks are on the shitty old Dell.

Sorry I can't be more use, but it's a start...

having one less box won't make any difference a diesel with only a straight pipe will still pass, a cat is not a legal requirement on a diesel ,smoke test only.

What a pisser, that's all this guy needs before xmas. A frigged up cat bypass and your ECU dabbling should be fine, MOT-wise as long as there's no eggsauce LEAK then there's only the smoke test (which it should pass easily).

Funny the other day I spoke to the mot tester I use and he showed me on his mot computer that a diesel must have a cat if fitted from new. The same applies to DPFs

that's where the confusion is it was to become a legal requirement that if the car had a cat from new it would need one for mot but they then decided not to go ahead with it and some mot places still think that you need one when you definitely don't.

Sorry to hear that mate, it's amazing no-one's asking where they're getting all the cats from

109BHP? So that's a 110 yes? (Could be 110, 136 or 163  ) Looks like they made them with and without. Without is quite straight forward but there are 3 RPOs on the with, plus auto or manual. And the whole system looks like it's different (any chance of a vin?)

On Channel 4 tonight at 21:00 hrs there's a programme on about the Scrap Metal trade (as part of their "getting rich in the recession" series of programmes).

I shall be watching with interest I think.

This is the mot testers manaul that all mot testers work from...

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/d ... guides.htm

Click on inspection manual for class 3,4,5, and 7 vehicles then browse, then next page until you reach section 7.1 and section 7.2 the truth is in there.

Read section 7.1 subsection 3 with the black line to highlight petrol engines.
