Tax Disc to be scrapped

Post by Welly »

Looks like they're planning on ditching the Tax Disc and using the Electronic Database for proof of purchase, also changing to Monthly Direct Debit (which is bloody brilliant for me running two cars).

Looks like most of the comments are the old chestnut of putting it on fuel instead, which would seem a fairer system to me if the government could be trusted to a) implement it fairly and b) not use it as a yearly excuse to heap even more tax onto the public.

There's also not being able to see at a glance if a car is legal, which is where the Croat system wins for once - no insurance, no registration (which includes all the environment tax etc.); no registration, no number plates (you have to hand them back or face a big fine)

Do you hear of many just running cars with no cover out there then or Is everyone scared of the fine? I know at least one person who never taxes his car so i bet the cars not even registered to him.

Like the DD idea.

Not really, if you don't hand the plates back and ignore the fine the cops come knocking on your door, so they generally go back. I have seen cars with no number plates on the road but it's rare, they're usually running to the mot station anyway. Mate of mine here didn't give his back but then he'd already gone back to the UK so they couldn't touch him, the car just sat in his shed and rotted. He couldn't even sell it legally as the fine was still hanging over it and that had to be settled before anything else could be done with it. Eventually it was flogged (unofficially) as scrap metal.

Until you realise that, much like how currently 2x 6 month tax discs cost more than 1x 12 month tax disc, your 12x monthly payments will add up to even more than the 2x 6 month discs because the DVLA are charging you interest.

But, see, my Tax is due at the end of Jan 2014 and will cost £150.00 ish (6 months) and I probably won't have 150 lying around at the end of Jan (I know I should put something to one side for these things but hey) so paying a bit more but spread evenly is very appealing to the house budget.

I haven't taxed a car for 12 months in a long long time :(

Scrap the DVLA. They're a bunch of useless morons. Take the money you save by binning these mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers, which will mean you can reduce VED to a more reasonable level.

Me neither; I can never afford to pay my whole year's insurance in one lump sum, so I get hit with that chunk of interest too.

I used to think "put it on fuel" was a fine idea, until I bought a car that's really cheap to tax. :supafrisk: I did calculate some time ago that taking the average motorist paying average tax in the average car doing average mileage, you'd be looking at around 10p a litre additional tax, I've no desire to pay an extra 10p a litre now!!!

How about "they already tax us 85% of the cost of fuel" so just scrap the damned VED completely and leave fuel prices the way they are?

You were paying 10 pence more back in March.

I would save £140.00/year if I didn't have to Tax my car but paid an extra 10p/l instead - I'd go for that no problem.

Yeah, that's exactly my point. A couple of years ago I'd have broken even, this year it'd cost me well over a ton. It'd save the misses money cos she does very low mileage. A few years ago I was running a weekend toy, paying a year's tax for probably 6 or 8 days of driving a year. It's all swings and roundabouts but right now it'd cost me bucks I don't have, so I don't want it

No, not at the moment anyway. They're just getting rid of the actual paper disc. The rest of this thread was a digression, weird that, never usually happens on this forum!
