Cut your loses,stick it back on ebay after xmas and look for one that's more sorted and has the money already spent on it,well that's what I'd do anyway.Trailering it that far up country would cost a small fortune.

Unless it's possible/legal to trailer it up north behind Miss Pug? Not sure if a 406 is allowed to tow something the same weight as it. Not sure if Miss Pug has a towbar anyway. If it were possible/legal then all you'd need to hire is a trailer.

If your not experienced in towing then towing at possibly over 100% trailerweight would not be advisable.

I'm not up on the regs but it's possibly illegal to tow over 100% but I know the insurance company would have something to say if anything went wrong,i tow out caravan at about 90% and that's about as far as I'd want to go with the 406.

The only 'rules' for towing are to do with maxium train weight 5.5 tonnes I think. And your vehicles max towing weight I dont think a 406 can tow enough weight even on a braked trailer to tow another 406

I might be wrong here but if she passed her test tomorrow she couldn't tow a caravan so using that rule why would she be able to tow a car the same weight?

Interestingly we towed a 405 estate 1.9 DT with a 405 estate 1.9 D, (non turbo), struggled on the hills but managed it

Just for the record, you can legally tow a car on the motorway providing you have a solid bar - and the car being towed does not need tax or MOT or insurance as it is attached to a car that is ( hopefully ) legal.

Abacus will hire a car transporter for £80 per day, or simply drive it and have a mate follow you up to be a tow car if anything goes wrong....

No, you cannot tow anything unless you have done a trailer test nowadays, unless you passed the driving test a while ago....

My 406 has pulled a Vw T4 out of a ditch no worries - and a loaded Transit that had broken down....

(The only way an untaxed vehicle can have wheels on the public highway is if it's on the way to, or from, a pre-booked MOT test, and even then it must be insured. )

even with A-frame the car been towed has to have insurance. (it has to be a none runner too,)

AA/RAC tow with bar but they only use them for short emergencys,. towing long journey with bar you wouid be stopped by old bill along the way.

Okay, I stand corrected. I have towed many cars and non have ever been roadworthy. I assumed that the car was 'towed' and not 'driven' which was fine..

Perhaps I just got away with it..

I bought a Micra for mum-in-law ages ago, from a chap who was a police highway officer - I was glad I took the towing bar with me. He did say it is legal to tow with a bar but didn't mention over what distance but I was towed for 120 miles home..

years ago you couid tow a car with nought on it as long as car pulling it was insured that's all gone now.

ithink front wheels have to be off ground now so as its classed as a braked trailer but still ithink it has to be none runner and insured.

You can tow whatever you like as long as the MTPLM of car + trailer is less than 3500kgs

There is a HUGE amount of disinformation on this subject out there and when I got my first caravan I spent days researching it.

If you passed after 1997 you can tow provided the MTPLM of the trailer does not exceed 750kg OR if it does exceed 750kg then the maximum permissible gross train weight must not exceed 3500kg.

My mates missus had to pass a trailor test before she could tow her horse box, but upon reflection a car + horsebox + horses is probably more than 3500kgs...
