Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
Good day
I accidentally got 500ml of water in my empty 1996 406 petrol tank,
Please can anyone assist in how to drain that water out in this specific car, i cranked the engine a few times before realising it, i also put in a litre of petrol afterwards.
Please can anyone assist on how i can drain or siphon out the petrol in this specific model ?

Sorry i meant just advise on how to proceed in getting the water out of the tank and engine, i assume it has water in the engine also because i went and cranked the engine with the starter ?
I will do the physical work myself, just need to know how to proceed please, i currently cannot go to work without my car.

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
realistically i would think the tank has got to be dropped and emptied. syphoning is good for removing the bulk of any liquid in there but you don't want ANY water being left in the tank
once emptied i'd also be inclined to leave it a couple of days to fully evaporate and pray that turning the engine over hasn't pumped any water that far.
could you source another tank from a scrapper? if the water has made it to the in tank pump but not as far as the engine it would be cheaper and easier all round to just whack another tank on complete?

Remove back seat remove lift pump and syphon out
there is another way but its risky with a petrol so im not mentioning that.
ithink it will have auntysyphon so no use trying getting pipe down neck of tank,
(how about removing filler neck off tank and sending apipe in that way ??)

hows he gonna find out if it's made it to the engine tho??. would removing the spark plugs and cranking it work?
if there is water in the engine then i think it'll be fubar'd anyway??

Underneath the car next to the petrol tank i found this silver object, is that it ?
Man i cranked the engine a lot and had the fuel pump running for a while....

There is away but its risky so iwouidnt recommend it.
and that be disconnecting fuel pipe and let car prime it out -but there is always that element of risk eg someone walking past with a lit B&H.

I read about people saying that if there is water in the engine, which i still don't know if it is the case but a possibility, one needs to drain the oil and crank the engine with the spark plugs out, put in new oil crank the engine, drain it again and repeat till all water is out... o my goodness i hope it's not the case....kevtherev wrote:thats exactly how i syphoned mine because my D8 had an anti syphon thingy in the neck.lozz wrote:Remove back seat remove lift pump and syphon out

Hi Lozz where i will be working on it, there will be no one, how do i do this if you look at the pics i've posted, where do i find it and will i have to cut the pipe or is it relatively easy to disconnect ?lozz wrote:There is away but its risky so iwouidnt recommend it.

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
did car actualy run out of fuel?
if not there might be 100% petrol in the lines and may of not reached engine,

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
the lift pump under the seats has a plastic "top" thing on it with two pipes that need disconnecting.
undo the plastic "top" you may need to GENTLY tap with a screwdriver to get it started. this unscrews and the whole pump unit comes out allowing a hose to be used for syphoning.
this doesn't sound good

you wouid have to find pipe on fuel rail they are pushfit connectors iirc406owner2 wrote:Hi Lozz where i will be working on it, there will be no one, how do i do this if you look at the pics i've posted, where do i find it and will i have to cut the pipe or is it relatively easy to disconnect ?lozz wrote:There is away but its risky so iwouidnt recommend it.

thanks..
car will only prime so much out out at once so itd involve flicking ign on and off a fair few times.
youd be best to disable something to you don't want the car to suddenly try and start.. the least little spark and the car is gone

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
it shouid be ok.if he gets 99% of the water out..kevtherev wrote:the lift pump under the seats has a plastic "top" thing on it with two pipes that need disconnecting.

plenty of clean petrol in tank and perhaps add a glug of red ex or the likes.
Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
Ok thanks i took some more pictures, with a close up of what i think is the cover for the tank fuel pump ? 2 rivets at bottom one rivet at the top.
Then 2 other pictures is 2 little pipes underneath at the tank, and then a big thick pipe should i try try and loosen should i drain from underneath the car, or would it be better to try and pop the rivets with a huge philips screwdriver and hammer and siphon it out from there ?
The story is this, i ran out of fuel, went to the garage with a bottle, asked them to fill it up, they said no, they can only put fuel in a jerrycan, so i got one they filled it up, i poured fuel from the jerry can to the bottle i had, for it had a funnel like top so easy to pur from the bottle, however i had an exact same bottle right next to me with water in it, in the rush and bad weather, i grabbed the wrong bottle and pured water in only realising it too late, there was no fuel in the car.
