Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
Ithink the wise thing to do is just find out why the pump isn't working to start with,
iwonder'ing if the car actualy did run out of fuel to start with - whats the possibility that the lift pump is fubar?

I thought a lift pump was an HDI thing and on this it's the main pump
What's in a name I guess.
These double relays often go faulty but I think the guy needs to get the water out of the tank before he does anything else, I'm not sure if it'll damage petrol injectors (anyone?) but I know for sure it'll kill diesel ones dead.

He might be lucky,if petrol pump as packed in, fuel/water may of not reached fuel rail .steve_earwig wrote:I thought a lift pump was an HDI thing and on this it's the main pumpWhat's in a name I guess.

ok attached pictures and description on one pic.
Do you guys know what is the 12v battery pins.
If anything needs more explanation, please do ask.
(the purple plug itself has the numbers printed on it)
Yes Lozz i'm also thinking that the car never ran out of fuel and that i needlessly poured in petrol/water in the tank.

So it's probably the other two wires but I won't feel comfortable about it unless you can tell me the codes off of the wires.

ithink your trying to test the low voltage live that works the fuel gauge,
Do you have a multimeter,??
as far as ican work out they work this way.. see pic

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
Thank you both, i'll do as much as it takes to explain as much as you ask of me, please do ask as much as required, i don't have a multimeter.... if i don't have another choice i will take some cash saved for getting a basic service for the car to buy one....
However from Fuz's pic,
I guess nrs 1 and 5 is then for the fuel guage and nrs 2 and 3 is for the fuel pump ?
Steve i guess you mean codes off the wires by peeling off the insulation on the wires of purple plug, i'll go do that and see if i can see something,
Loz below pictures of where i looked at the fuses i guess the one marked in yellow is F10 ? as you indicated in the pic, unless there is more places i should look for fuses ?

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
as far as ican see, Pin 3 (centre of a five pin fuel pump connector) should be +12V with ignition on.
imight be wrong tho, im not much use with wiring diagram's.
edit scratch that, ignore, above iwas looking at hdi,
peel back the coating and get the numbers off the wires like steve says,

1&5 are the sender, 2&4 are the pump (3 is blank, yes?)406owner2 wrote:I guess nrs 1 and 5 is then for the fuel guage and nrs 2 and 3 is for the fuel pump ?
I'd think if you're going to run an old car on a tight budget you won't get far without a meter. It doesn't have to be anything flashy and you should (no idea of the prices in Norway) be able to pick one up for the price of a spark plug.

Hi Steve, 3 is blank yes, if i have to have a meter i'll go buy one, i just hope we can get to the cause then for i won't be able to afford a callout on a mechanic if i get the meter, so far so good however i am extremely glad for the help you guys have given me so far, i really see us making progress here, i'll go see if i can find something cheap. i'm hold thumbs...
So now would you be able to tell me which is plus and minus on the pump ?
will the meter be able to tell that ?

steve is best on diagram's.

Re: Water in my 1996 406 pls help!
I'm hoping the diagrams are right because they tie in with what the OP found on the terminals, although if I was doing this I'd double check with the meter, so yes a meter would be useful here.
I've spent years looking at wiring diagrams so I'm probably ok at reading them. Unfortunately I've learned not to trust any of them, especially Haynes. Those snips are from Haynes but they're the same as that Sam Napraviam so they may just be trustworthy. I didn't post the Sam Napraviam ones because it's hard to read around corners
